I've posted here occasionally in the past, but I've been away from the newsgroup lately for various reasons. The last two days have been two of the worst that I've experienced for a long while. Some past actions of mine that I am not proud of have been coming back to haunt me (karma has finally caught up, I guess). I came home this afternoon physically and emotionally exhausted. I was definitely in the mood for a bit of escapism. So I sat down with a cup of coffee (non-Starbuck coffee, I might add), and caught up with what's been going on with the newsgoup. *Here's where the mushy part begins. You have been warned* What an incredible group of people you are :-)! It is rare to find this consistency of articulate posts on a newsgoup. One gets the feeling that a lot of care goes into each individual post. Most miscommunications are dealt with maturely and civilly, and people go out of their way to avoid stepping on other people's toes. If a person *does* inadvertantly make a mistake in what they say, they are corrected tactfully, without being made to feel like a complete moron ( I know this because I have been the "complete moron" occasionally). Finally, the sense of humour demonstrated here is amazing! There are a lot of funny people out there - kudos to you for keeping things so upbeat and entertaining! The overall impression that I get after reading an entire weeks (!) worth of posts is that the people here genuinely care about and like each other. This is refreshing to see in a world of flame-wars and spam. Unfortunately, I've felt quite uncomfertable posting here in the past, because I sometimes get the impression that everyone else knows each other personally, and then there's me. (Not that I've ever felt *unwelcome* here, please don't take it that way.) Out of curiousity: is there anyone here who hasn't personally met any fellow ng-ers? That's it! If you're still reading this, congratulations! Thank you for letting me vent. It's a pretty popular story, so I can't see why I've had such a hard time finding it. Obviously I should get off my duff, and start looking harder! Admittedly, I've only been to Coles so far. Coles is great if you're a nine year old looking for the latest "Goosebump" book, but I don't think it has much beyond that. Speaking of books, I got my latest book in my World Lit class the other day - Solzhenitysen :-)! I signed the inside of the book "Krista Shackleford, belonging to The Chef, before he put it down". I wish I could be there next year when some rosy-cheeked youngster eagerly opens up his new copy of "A Day in the Life of Ivan 'Whats-his-name'" - and finds mine and the chef's signatures scrawled on the inside. I kept pulling chunks out of a granite countertop and marveling at their beauty. The countertop was constantly intact, though. Anyway, while we were talking a guy walked by in a budgiedog tshirt. Krista, I'm afraid you are making assumptions. Really, the NG reads much more like that than it really is. I've been on this NG since mid 1995 and I've only met ANYBODY in the last 8 month, and even then I am sure I haven't met even 1/3 of the people who post (nevermind the lurkers) It is true some people do know each other quite well, but really many of us only know each other online through posts and IRC. If you hang around here long enough you get a sense of people even if you have never met them. It is quite interesting. As for how to become more involved? Post Post Post! Also try IRC--internet relay chat--it is a great way to start "Talking" to people in a more conversational mode. There is usually always SOMEONE on #moxyfruvous (on Undernet, more info can be found on FDC). Also if you are an ICQ user there are a number of us on there. Finally if you want to actually meet any of these online psychos start introducing yourself at concerts. Once you connect with one, you are gonna meet more than you will be able to keep straight. In short get over it and come play. Nobody here is nearly as scary as they seem (except for Chad of course, but that is just the height thing) :) And once you get to know them a bit that becomes more and more clear. Hope that helps. There are (were???) long tables lines up vertically from the stage where a lot of people are seated together (the better for early-arriving Fruheads and NG posters to meet and mingle), then an aisle-type area where the wait-people walk and then a slightly raised area with more tables. It's definitely a sit and eat and drink place, not a stand and hang place, though you CAN STAND BY THE BAR (stage Mur direction). Now, as I said, it's been years since I've gone there (since moving from midtown Manhattan where I grew up to DC) but that's the way it used to be and I suspect it's the same. I read it to my campers at camp at least once a summer, and have for about seven years now (even when I was a camper myself!) Love love love. Then, in another post, JennCyn spake thusly, "How about Red Dwarf fans? There must be some in this crowd. :) ("Step it up to red alert!" "Sir, are you absolutely sure? Yeah, me to. You know, when I was younger, I wrote to/called rare bookstores all over the country attempting to find the Simon Morgenstern version *****IF YOU'VE NEVER READ THE BOOK, STOP READING THIS POST NOW!!!****** but I was crushed to find out that it was all fiction. Looking back, there were plenty of indicators, I just wanted to believe, you know? I think it makes the book better. Really.
