What else can you say about these guys? I've seen quite a few shows over the years and I, nor my friend Mike, could not remember seeing an opening band receive the screaming requests for an encore they gave Fruvous. I was still a little confused about why Moxy was opening for the Violent Femmes and not the other way around. I can only remember the Femmes first album and maybe two songs from 1986. But apparently they've released 8 albums in the last twelve years or so, so they get top billing. Anyway, they combined to easily sell out a nice-sized venue. It looked to me like the crowd was about a 40-60 split. A lot of people there had never seen Moxy before (as evidenced by the usual poll Jian takes). But they won them over. I heard some people behind me saying, "Hey, I like these guys." I got to hear a few new songs I hadn't heard on this tour and I got to talk to Jian and Mike afterwards. Their show itself was pretty hyper-paced with not a whole lot of banter, but it's always funny to watch them incite the crowd by calling them hippies and geeks and throwing around Femme references even Femme-heads may not have picked up on. Mike at one point asked if there was any truth to the rumour that they considered changing their name to the "Militant Femmes?" Dave played a great King of Spain and avoided bad puns during the evening as far as I could tell. Jian was unusually humble, probably because they felt outnumbered, but there were plenty of Fru-heads and Fru-jerseys and Fru-buttons and Jason Reiser's microphone to clearly establish a presence. It's always amazing to me with the number of fans they have, the details they remember about you when they see you (I know I'm not the only one). I haven't seen them play since May, and I don't think I've talked to Mike in nearly a year, but he remembered where he last saw me, he remembered dropping my name in BJ Don't Cry that day and he remembered a Fruvous candle my brother made for him three years ago. And they're always like that! A couple of years ago, the guys were asking their fans what we would like to see or what they could do for us. I think that's how the whole Fru-Con thing started. Jian found me after a show and started to ask me that same question, but we were interrupted and I never got to answer. The fact that he was standing there asking me that question was all that any fan could ask for. I don't need Fru-Con, or prizes for travelling to shows (though I would have loved bowling and dancing with Dave). Just a simple, "Hi Bill. How've you been?" And they give me that every single time. I generally get an ok spot at a Fruvous concert, but would love to get closer, and on occasion I may spot a potential "open" area that I could abandon my friends (they sympathize and tell me go for it) and pop into. here are my dilemmas: I'm 5'6," and rather conscious of my height so I don't want to block anyone, but in the meantime I'm behind someone 2x as wide as me or with big hair or something like that (and the people who don't dance... how can you _not_ dance at a Fruvous concert??). The last time a friend and I encountered that and asked if the very tall person could shift a few feet, his response was less than comforting... to say the least. Secondly, sometimes I get the feeling that the first few feet around the stage are a "club members only" kind of area... not in a rude way or anything, just that I feel like I would be intruding in a sacred area or something. What sort of initiation would I have to go through to learn the password ? ;^) I've been told to just elbow my way up and make room for myself, but that isn't really me... I'm not that aggressive. Way to go, Ellen. That sums it up perfectly. Drive from Columbia to Wilmington was uneventful except for a little traffic, but I do want to mention the excellent signage along the big street in Wilmington that led to the church. My favorite was the early 60s pink and yellow neon for the Charcoal Pit; it only slightly surpassed Happy Harry's Discount Drugs, which dispayed the cheery, slightly leering visage of Harry himself in fully illuminated glory. Woohoo! We found the church with no problems and were seated in the first pew, though there were folding chairs in front of us. Soon we were joined by several others from the DC-area cabal of Fruvousness: Chad, Wendy, Chris, and Zard, among others. This was not by design. I was determined to introduce myself to people, and I did. It was nice to meet folks after all this time. OK, Amanda. But how was the show? The opening act was John Flynn, a Folk Singer with a capital F and a capital S. Nice voice, good guitarist. He could probably be the next Raffi if he put his mind to it. (I mean that in a nice way; pretend I'm Canadian.) He was one of the standouts among the acts I've seen open for Fruvous. Later in the show, Jian's assumption that his name was John Glenn led to some great banter about how he'd just come back from space, and maybe he'd go back to space when he was 110. Fruvous came out to much cheering from the audience, so Murray and Jian started thanking people for coming and said good night. Then they made some jokes about the thick wooden pillars. "I feel safe," said Murray as he pounded the one next to him. The setlist, in approximate order. Early Morning Rain Incredible Medicine Show Sad Girl Horseshoes (Mike on piano) Darlington Darling I Love My Boss Spiderman Gotta Get a Message to You Present Tense Tureen Boo Time (Dave on piano) Homeward Bound (Mike and Jian) Pisco Bandito Johnny Saucep'n You Will Go to the Moon (Improv from Peter and the Wolf) King of Spain Green Eggs and Ham (Improv from "Life Goes On" with Mike at the piano) Michigan Militia BJ Don't Cry Dancing Queen Encore: My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors Hey Organ Grinder 2nd Encore: Gulf War Song (off mic) Early Morning Rain was a cool opener. This one has improved since Noho, or maybe I'm just getting used to it. Murray asked for more volume after the song was over. "...and a little more of my own singing voice." Cheers from the crowd. Murray's shirt tonight was a near-spectacular shade of canteloupe, but its solidness had it midlining on the Murr-o-meter. 5.5. Murray's levels adjusted, Dave introduced Incredible Medicine Show. Oddly enough, this had been my song for Tuesday. Seems like they started having sound problems after this one, though. It sounded off balance and wasn't all that well received. I've always liked it quite a bit, though. I'm still don't care for Sad Girl. I think it's the second rhyme "Taking your cue from every ad, girl." I just can't get into it and it sounds even more forced than "Happy Birthday Tricia/I'm in the Michigan Milita." Of the new songs, it's my least favorite. I kept thinking that there had to be a smoother way to keep the structure and the idea of the song. Maybe there's just not. Lots of great banter in this show. I think my favorite was the long bit about how Mike and Dave don't really talk off-stage, they communicate through Murray and Jian. Another passage had Murray and Jian doing a riff off Dave's Peter and the Wolf piano line. They had divided the audience into wolves, sheep and "eeks". The Eeks were in the balcony, and no offense, but they were obnoxious as hell after they'd been noticed. The animal theme continued for a while. A separate section had the band speculating that the iron and stained glass mobile that hung over the stage would fall, beheading one of the members. Jian said that, like Nirvana, Fruvous would capitalize on the death of one of their members. "But on the up side, their album Live Noise has gone to Number Two!" was Murr's quip. "The drummer was seen pulling a lever just before the beheading occurred" For once, there were more jokes about Mike's shirt than Murray's. Mike called it his Kingston Trio shirt, and later Dave (?) made a remark about how Mike was in the Kingston Trio, then spent three years in prison, then joined Fruvous. I think you had to be there. There was much chatter when they stepped to the front before the off-mic section. It went on for such a long time that Jian laughed and said "I don't know what you're looking at, the rest of the show is spoken word." I Love My Boss was a real treat, they took it out into the audience, with Jian climbing around the pews while Mike perched on a windowsill and flipped through the Unitarian hymnal. I think it would have been hysterical if he'd started one of the crunchy-granola hymns. (My mom is a Unitarian, and I was kind of raised Unitarian; If you can be a fallen Unitarian, I am one.) Other highlights included Green Eggs and Ham, complete with Mike singing a song about Mr. Cheese at the piano after the Not the Beatles break. Boo Time with the piano was nifty. Dave played very well; "Thirty-two percent more fun with Dave!" said Mike. I agree. The audience was standing for the last song, Dancing Queen/Walk on the Wild Side, and that proved a great way to end the set. Though I'm a total sucker for Love Potion, I think DQ is my favorite of the medleys. They came back out quickly for the first encore, an upbeat Authors with "my crucifiction" seeming very appropriate. Murray told the audience not to sit down, but I think some of them did, anyway. Then Hey, Organ Grinder, another upbeat number that was a lot of fun. Then they left the stage again, and I wasn't sure they'd come back. However, they stood in front of the organ to sing the Gulf War Song. Did I mention that we were sitting right in front of the organ? This song means so much to me, for reasons I can't adequately explain. It's the combination of the sentiment, the words and those lovely blended voices. There isn't much reverence in my life; at this point, it's almost all tied up in that song. To hear it twice in a week was amazing. There was some tittering in the crowd from people who'd never heard lines like "Don't tell me I can't fight 'cause I'll punch out your lights" but by the end of the song, there was rapt silence. I thought I saw a reflection of that in the guys faces as they sang the last couple of lines, something like pride in craftsmanship. As we pulled into the driveway back in Maryland, we noticed that the moon was big and yellow, curved into a contented grin of bliss followed. Lots of stars out, soft cool breeze that smelled of leaves and grass. It had been a lovely evening. - --Amanda Paper Covers Rock. Scissors cut Paper.
