Okay, lets all take a deep breath. Close your eyes and think of your happy place. Are you in your happy place? Okay... This is really silly. I mean, maybe it's just me, but having read over this thread a couple times, most of the arguments stem from misunderstandings... from people making assumptions about one another that aren't on target, and then engaging the fingers in a response a little too quickly. I was a little put off by Lynns initial post. As a USENET veteran, I'm kinda used to the rule that you don't post private e-mail to a newsgroup to then tear apart someone's views in public. Lynn did this, albeit without mentioning the authors name. I thought I'd respond privately, but then wondered if my e-mail would wind up here on the newsgroup as well. *shrug* Maybe it's just the way that things work now, and I'll have to get used to it. Lynn has obviously been upset that some fans are a little over- protective of the band, and she felt attacked for using her camera flash when she hadn't been previously warned. I can understand that. I've seen it. I've seen some fans that just get a little *too* into protecting the band, and sometimes offend others in the process. It's not *common* but it happens. Perhaps when she received mail from another fan suggesting that she not ask certain questions of the band, she assumed that this was another fan being overprotective. Consider the other side of the coin - that there may be some truly obsessive fans who just don't know what's appropriate and what's not. It's not worth getting upset about. We obviously all find something special about this band. Maybe we can give each other a little leeway and ask for clarification when there are doubts instead of jumping down each others throats. >I may be wrong, but I'm sure I speak for the majority on this. Indeed, you may be wrong, Skip. It seems that far too many people think they have a whole newsgroup behind them. We all speak for a minority of one. I admit, it's kinda lame, but think of it this way. The next time you're about to flame someone, ask yourself if you'd say it in real life to their face. If you wouldn't, and I suspect that goes for most of the garbage in this thread, maybe you should trash it. It's lame advice, I admit... but keep in mind that this group DOES have real people here, many of whom have enjoyed getting to know one another in real life. If you go to shows, there's a chance you'll run into some of the people you just thoughtlessly tore apart. As for the question about Jian's actions and emotions in the Drinking Song, I'd suggest letting it go. Jian knows what he's doing, and he knows that we know. If we were supposed to have a complete understanding of his emotional state when he grabs his necklace, we probably would. It's not like he doesn't get a chance to express himself every now and then. ;) Someone in a thread a while back on a similar topic suggested that we all take a step back and remember that we are fans, not friends. These guys go very far out of their way to get to know us as people, and we do likewise. We see each other at shows, share stories and experiences, and generally behave a lot like friends. But this is a band, and we are *fans*... not friends. I'm not setting them, but you have to admit that there are boundries to this relationship. You can push them all you want, but try to respect them. You may find that other random fans may become some of your best friends in the world. Shift the focus toward trying to get to know some of these people better. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The really sad thing is that all these companies are owned by larger companies. Most of these businesses have learned that raising prices isn't gonna gain customers since most of us (I dunno about Canadians but I speak for the general American populous here) are pretty much broke. I don't know who owns Starbucks but I'm sure someone does and I'm gonna look into it if anyone is interested. The following ramblings are in no particular order, just some thoughts about the concert: I finally learned what the illustrious Johnny Saucep'n Handjive is all about though I was too busy bouncing and trying to keep up with the lyrics to learn it. My friends and I successfully manipulatated Darnell the bouncer in many instances. I *almost* cried during Gulf War Song, which I had never heard as an ending piece before. I got a hug from Toby, the merch guy and a lovely story about his beautiful hairpiece. I learned the brand of Jian's infamous corduroy pants. Some of the earlier quieter songs were injured by the management's tendency to chuck beer bottles into a garbage can at random intervals, even after Jian made a rather biting joke about it which they should've taken as a clue to be more respectful. Dave goes to Mcdonalds alone so that the other guys won't steal his fries (actually this is just speculation.) The frulads played an excellent show and were right on pitch the entire time, despite giggling fits over Murray's pitch pipe. Mike made a rather clever, albeit crass, joke about Dave's Johns Hopkins. I got to meet the other topless chick but somehow missed seeing whatever chad it was that was supposed to be there. That's about all I have to say about the show besides thanks to the guys for playing such an excellent set and thanks to the ppl I met for being such a pleasant, friendly lot. AND NOW A BRIEF PSA- Last year sometime someone mentioned they were taking a class on internet culture and that they did a paper on fru-fans especially.
