I've opened the eyes of a good number of friends to the wonder of Fruvous (actually dragged a couple of 1st timers to the concert on 11/5, they're hooked). When I was added to the FruFans page on FDC, I got email from a few people, but that was soooooooo long ago. anyway (you'll notice I say that alot, can't help it), I think getting together would be a great idea... and I'm also using this as an opportunity for a shameless plea: i really want to go to Ithaca on 12/1 (promised some people I'd be there), but I have to work the next day, and I know I'm not going to be awake enough to drive 3 hrs there, Frolic in Fruvolity, and drive 3 hrs back. anyone daring to make the overnight? I'll drive either there or back if you would like me to, and pitch in for gas & tolls. I'm also curious as to who's going to NYC for New Year's from Roch, since I have that Thurs, Fri and Sat off... I- just got news that I have a rehearsal on 12/1, can't make Ithaca... arrghh!!!! ok... NYC anyone? I'm not trying to offend anyone or push any buttons here so if you are easily riled on the topic of flash photography, quit reading and delete. Also if you're hoping for some offer of a truckload of good pics then quit reading now and delete. I'm not a pro. I have my own equipment and I consider photography my expensive hobby like some people consider boating or cars or homes. I would like to believe I do good work. I prefer black and white, because I feel it allows more artistic say. Now then. Flash vs non-flash. I have found through varied experiments that in a concert setting, a flash isn't going to help your picture any due to the nature of stage lighting. Also, I have found that several people don't really know their camera, and have built in flashes which either cannot be turned off or are complex enough that they don't know how to use the camera without the flash. Many cameras now actually don't allow you to choose for yourself whether the flash is on or off. Anyways. I just wanted to say, when you take photos with no flash (or with one that is covered) then my suggestion is not to go beyond a 400 speed film. When you turn in your film for processing, in the "Special instructions" box write "PUSH PROCESS AS 1600" This, if they follow your instructions, will allow you to have pictures that actually are quite well exposed and almost-correct lighting, without being exceptionally grainy. Then again, if grain doesn't matter (if you are not going to blow it up any) then just buy 1600 or even 800 speed film if you can find them. I, however, will always cherish my 11x14 framed complete with all the guys signatures. :) Ok I know this is little to no fru-content so go ahead and ignore me again now. If you develop B+W film by hand, its real simple to do. I would recommend everyone to take a basic photography course. It would do wonders for many people who like pictures, but don't really know how to make a good one. I usually shoot with 1600 speed film, without the flash, and even still the pictures always don't come out great. I've even thought about not taking color pictures at shows, unless they're outside. I just recently shot 3200 speed at the Buffalo Shows. I don't know how it came out, but I would be willing to bet they came out pretty decent. Anyway...enough blabbering.
