(and a review or two) [Jason A Hare Subject: Topless in Baltimore One time I went to Sound Garden and I was wearing my Ben Folds five T-shirt. I didn't plan on buying it but when I got there I saw that they had a Ben Folds five single made in Austria. A single I already had but it had this weird cheesy cover so I *had* to buy it. Well, I get up to the counter and I mention how dorky I feel buying the band whose tshirt I was wearing. And the guy at the counter said that to avoid that, next time I come to the store I should definately go topless. The guy behind him stocking cds kind of chuckled. I was mildly amused until after I signed my credit slip the guy wouldn't give me my bag back until I promised to come to the store topless next time. The next time I went after that I was with my fiance so he wouldn't let me take off my shirt for the guys at the record store. (c= Okay, so you're all thinking, "Well, thanks Autumn for that lovely, albeit frightening, story about going topless at the Sound Garden. But where is your Fruvous Content?" Um, the time I went with my fiance I was going to buy Bargainville but then I bought the Song For The Dumped single instead. Don't you hate it where there's lots of cds you want and you look at them all everytime you go to the store and you debate which one you should buy when really you don't have any money to buy any of them? Between not owning all the Fruvous cds yet, wanting the new Autour de Lucie cd, having the majority of They Might Be Giants albums on cassette, wondering if the rest of the Wes Cunningham cd is as good as the one song I heard on the radio, and wanting to know what kind of music a band called Alice Donut could possibly play I practically tear myself in half everytime I go to the store. And so, by attempting to add Fruvous Content to her message, Autumn succeeded in further diminishing the fruvous to non-fruvous content ratio. *LICKS* Autumn Patterson Goddess of the Lick and Editor of Precious Meat http://www.gl.umbc.edu/~apatte2 "I'm a Psychosomatic sister running around without a leash." - Liz Phair ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 13:08:09 -0700 From: "Bridget" Subject: Re: Fru fest weekend 98, pt I (really long!!) >Amy - player of the recently dubbed fru-flute and owner of a little red >fox named Jian *stop laughing!* > >"It's not forbidden to be what you are. > Dip into that great big cookie jar!" > ~Moxy Fruvous >"'If' is the middle word of life, man!" > ~Murray Foster >"Alright! As far as I know, it's not recorded yet. . .well, at least not in a studio. ceecee ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 16:03:45 -0500 From: ksucy@eznet.net (Shilfiell Nels Rada) Subject: Re: Fru fest weekend 98, pt I (really long!!) It's getting a bit tough in downtown Rochester, though....the Water St. Music Hall might get shut down due to the ultra-violence occurring there, the Renaissance/Heaven/Spectrum/New York Nights changes management more often than I change hair care products (and it's haunted, you know), the Aud is seated-only (bleh) and the Corporate Sponsorship Memorial is just too darn big. I rembemer seeing Bow Wow Wow in the basement of the Auditorium and having a great time, but it would be a bit cramped for this bunch. Maybe they could play the Highland Bowl again and we could all just bundle up? > during Minnie, Mike made a point to play around with and sing to a little > red fox (owned by yours truly). (and a review or two) Hi everybody, I'm coming out of lurk mode to briefly tell a bit about this weekend with the shows at the Tralf. I have already seen a few in-depth reviews so I will just mention a bit. I think the Buffalo Fruvous experience worked best if you got to see both shows- Friday night was more of a mainstream night, whereas Saturday was more obscure and gave the well-rounded FruFan an enjoyable weekend :-) Friday was PACKED with people of all ages. It reminded me of when I took my parents and my 11 year old brother to see the band at Tramps in March of 97. The show was great- although I think the guys looked a bit tired- but they did enough of the songs we've come to expect with a few nice additions. This was my 10th Fruvous show and with the exception of one in-store, it's yet another concert where I heard songs I hadn't heard before live. This night, it was a full version of It's Too Cold and Nuits De Reve. I had always hoped to hear the latter live. It's also always nice to hear stuff like Laika and Marion Fruvous, which I also had not heard before. Saturday was a bit smaller, which was nice because I was able to make my way up to the third row. They played most of the new stuff (Pisco Bandito, Sad Girl, Half as Much, I Will Hold On- Jian, did you write this? Extremely strong stuff and really great lyrics), plus a brand new one called Grudge. It's always nice to see Murray singing lead. My girlfriend is probably very upset she missed it :-) It was great to hear other stuff I don't usually hear, such as Cross-Border Shopping, Stuck in the 90s, Allison, Substitute (I'm such a Who fan), Homeward Bound...all in all, a very nice night. I spoke briefly to Jian after the show just to let him know that i really enjoyed the direction the new stuff was going in. I told him I thought it was different from YWGTTM- I felt that YWGTTM sounded very filled- lots of instruments, almost too polished and melodic. To hear stuff like "Sad Girl" reminds me of some stuff off of Wood. Pisco Bandito is the stuff that made me love Fruvous in the first place. Grudge combines their strong music with those ever present harmonies. All in all, great stuff. I'm assuming that perhaps one of the band is checking out this message and if not, maybe someone will agree with my suggestion and pass it on to them. It's so clear that the guys take a lot of influence from Stevie Wonder- one of my favorite artists. They've played at least two of his songs before. For your next cover, check out "Too High" from Innervisions. I would be willing to bet you guys could really be inventive with this one. The bass line, the opening harmonies, and some great harmonies could work over the verses...just an idea. That's all from me. Hope all of you that went had as much fun as I did. I guess I'll disappear until New Year's Eve now :-) Jay PS Toby, thanks for being so friendly and offering really nice conversation at the end of the night- yes, I KNOW they don't lug the piano around everywhere they go :-) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* ****** Jason Hare :-) ****** http://www.acsu.buffalo.edu/~hare The best things in life are unexpected. - Jadey ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V1 #984 ********************************************
