Will it be ready for Fru-Con '99? I doubt it, but think of the problems it will solve for transportation to Toronto shows for us Rochesterians in the future, eh? Bear with me for a couple of minutes. My mind has been mulling over a bunch of things lately. And, as I sit here listening to "Bargianville" I would like to share a couple of them with you all.... (Also, this will probably need a few revisions after I send it. I am famous for thinking of a better thing to say a while after I should have said it.) First of all, this is the first fan group that I have followed and/or participated in for a while. Unlike the other groups that I have dropped into for a while, you all are very positive and I look forward to reading posts in the group. (And, well, I guess contributing a bunch of them too. :) Everyone here is very friendly and very open. There is a stong community here that doesn't exist in many other places. It is something very special. You all have made me laugh when I needed it most and helped to keep me sane while other things in my life spiralled out of control. NoHo was incredible for me because of you all. Yes, Fruvous played two unbelievable shows, but it was all of the FruHeads that helped to make it a truly special experience for me. (Steve, the friend of mine that came with me, said that it was one of the few times he had seen me really happy. He says that I should have been British, since I so rarely show very much emotion toward anything.) Also, we are very tolerant of each other's views and ideas. From local politics to things about the band themselves. Speaking of which, something that is glaring in its absence is an ongoing flamefest over which is the coolest/best/most talented/cutest/etc FruLad. Who cares? Each one of them is the coolest/best/most talented/cutest/etc in their own unique way. We each have our favorite FruLad for whatever reason that makes him our favorite. And, of course, Moxy Fruvous themselves. To them, I can only say wow. You all are so great, it is almost beyond belief. (And yes, I am including Cal, Tobey, and Jude in with that. They each contribute to how great all of this is.) How many other groups have such a close relationship to their fans? How many other bands would do things like attend a fan party after a show? Or play a pick-up soccer game with a couple of fans on an off day? You are approachable, down-to-earth, and just really great guys. I am greatful for any chance I get to see you live and how much happiness you bring me when I listen to the CDs. (Just come back to Annapolis soon please. I can't travel nearly as much as I would like to. ;) I can't really say any more (as a loud cheer comes from the newsgroup :), but I am really looking forward to the Baltimore and Wilmington shows this week. Hmm... So much for the British thing. Richard, maybe what you have is spreading. :) (Thank you for reading this far, though.) AS a complete aside, I am listening to MoreFM right now, live from Auckland, via RealAudio, and they just had an ad for a concert that the BeeGees are giving. Included was a clip of "Message." My first thought was how weird it sounded. The Fruversion is much better. :) (http://www.91.8fm.co.nz/) - -- chad@ radix.net ...a first. a post completely about FruStuff. I think this thread (and the Drinking Song co-thread) once again show why Fruheads are Fruheads. It's not just about music and dancing. It's about catharsis, and the impact well-chosen and well-presented lyrics can have on people. A far cry from most pop music, and maybe that's why, when we hear it, so much emotion comes rushing out, and why we bond so much with this band and each other. It's cheaper and more instantly accessible than therapy, and it may be just as beneficial. - --Lori (who is not making light of this; I've done both, and at the moment Fruvous seems to speak to me more clearly and consistently than cognitive theory.) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Nov 1998 17:10:52 GMT From: Srm9988n@aol.com Subject: Jess Klein/Dan Bern in Philly -- or, now I know why I love Fruheads This isn't going to be a review, more a comment. Steve and I saw these two at the Sam Adams Brew Pub last night, per June's tip-of-the-week. It was a tiny little room, maybe 15 feet wide by 80 deep, and into it were packed perhaps 250 people, perhaps more, most of us standing. It was crowded. It was hot. It was smokey. During the sound check there was a lot of reverb from the speakers, which apparently wasn't fixable, given the dimensions of the room. It wasn't all that pleasant, and it didn't get better as the night went on.... Jess Klein opened and was truly wonderful. I talked to her afterwards and told her that now I knew why all the Fruheads had been raving about her after last weekend, and she seemed to really appreciate it. She said she'd love to open for Moxy again, it had been fun. Given that an opening act has a really tough job to do -- knowing that most people aren't there to see them - -- I took that as a sign that you guys had really been supportive of her efforts. By contrast, last night there was so much noise from the back 2/3 of the room that it was really hard to hear her between-songs talk, and sometimes even her songs. I was about six "rows" back, and I was pretty pissed off that all these people who had paid ten bucks to get in didn't have the decency to shut up and listen to the music. She played the "Certified Hard-Core Bitch" song, a song about clouds, and a few other really nice tunes that I wish I'd been able to hear more clearly over the rumble behind me. For Dan Bern the crowd, if anything, got bigger, noisier, and more obnoxious. There were people who just acted entitled to be up front -- at first we let them go, thinking they were joining others, but then we realized they were just being pushy so we (Steve, me, and about 4 people around us) just basically tried to shut down the little bit of space around us so we might have a little room to breathe, shuffle our feet, etc. One of the guys next to me semi-jokingly said that you know they're exceeding the fire code and safety capacity of a room when you feel not one but two different asses on yours, and it's really weird when you can't even see the persons they belong to, but you just *know* they're guys. I had to laugh, but it really was like that. Uggh. Anyway, the self-entitled people just pushed their way as far up front as they could, ignoring the fact that some of us had gotten there two hours before the show to get those places, then stood there YELLING the lyrics and trying to get Dan's attention, completely uncaring about the fact that they were really pissing off the people around them. They got in several loud, profane arguments with people who asked them to pipe down a little. At first, having never seen Dan Bern before, I thought maybe they were part of his entourage, or groupies or whatever, but whenever they yelled out something semi-apropos, although he seemed to appreciate that he had repeat concert-goers there, he didn't seem to have the faintest idea who they were. At one point some a**hole behind us completely ruined one of his intros with the punch line, at which point Dan just pointedly called him an a**hole. He seemed to brush it off, but he didn't come back for an encore either. Anyway, I just wanted to say that although I haven't met any of you, I have been at six different concerts with some of you, and I have *never* experienced anything like this at a Fruvous gig. Even at folk festivals, with thousands of people in attendance, the Fruhead contingent, although sometimes they seemed to be there *only* to see Fruvous, was respectful of the people around them, not being pushy or self- aggrandizing because they'd seen the band before. (Well, okay, except for the "mosh pit" in Ottawa -- LOL! -- and Steve and I were there annoying Chopper as much as any of you, although we didn't "steal" anything from the stage. But as he was the only one who seemed annoyed, I'll stick by my point.) My point being that, having seen the other side of fan "loyalty" last night, I'd much rather be a Fruhead. And I'm not going to see Dan Bern in a bar again. - -- Lori (whose throat is still scratchy from all that cigarette smoke) ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V1 #977 ********************************************
