Josh Drury asked: > Uh... Are libertarians the same in the states as they are in Canada? > 'Cause they're pretty whacked out up here. Some of them are (the scary ones...maybe they're members of the Michigan Militia) but some of them are actually quite principled and consistent in their views. The lunatic fringe element is what gives them a bad name and reduces even the qualified ones to the category of also-rans. The are basically into: low taxes (NO taxes!), conservative constitutional interpretation, but quite liberal personal-privacy issues. So they generally are against the welfare state and gun control, but are pro-choice, anti-government-peering-into-the-bedroom (or wherever) and for the decriminalization of drugs. At this level I find them much more consistent than many Republicans. (Oh God here I go digging myself so far down I'll never get out.) Let me point out that I am NOT a Libertarian and am speaking only of my impression of their views, not AS one. So I know I didn't get this exactly right. - -- Lori (ducks, runs for cover) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 20:44:26 GMT From: nicole.the.wonder.nerd.is@ana.ng.at.tmbg.org (Nicole the Wonder Nerd) Subject: Re: Hail Americans! I hope the Canucks reading this are as amused as my husband and I were.... We had moved to Gatineau QC in June 1993, and one of the infamous referenda (all Canadians: groan in unison now) was coming up. So... One Saturday afternoon some students from the CEGEP came knocking, wanting to register our block for the election. And they DIDN'T CARE that we were Americans! They merely asked, "How long have you lived here", kept writing busily, and said "well, of course you can vote. You've lived here long enough." Well, I was rather bemused. We Yanks are supposed to recite "the mantra" in all such situations: you know, "We're concerned, of course, but it's something you Canadians have to settle." Yet here we were being prodded to -- not just voice an opinion -- on beginning a Quebec separation process, but to VOTE said opinion, just as if we were actual Canadians who actually had a long-term, patriotic stake in the situation! They were quite offended when we insisted that no, we didn't really feel we should vote. *shrug* Just can't please everyone, I guess. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 18:19:24 -0500 From: Moxy Fruvous Subject: *IMPORTANT TOUR UPDATES* Hi Everybody!
