I've taken to saying, "You know They Might Be Giants? Imagine that there's four of them and they can all sing a capella, with one of them bringing a banjo or accordion in on select songs." It doesn't form a very good mental image for 'em, but I think it's kinda accurate. :) - - Marty, floundering for inspiration ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 16:48:00 GMT From: "Demetriou, Melanie" Subject: RE: a quick question On Friday, October 30, 1998 11:12 AM, Marty Blase [SMTP:mblase@ncsa.uiuc.edu] wrote: > > > Wouldn't you feel kind of sheepish using this? If any folks need a place to stay near NoHo Friday and-or Saturday, I just discovered that I booked a room (must have been done in my sleep a few weeks ago) in West Springfield, Mass. that I don't plan to use. The reservation is in my name at the Econolodge there. The rate is $45/night. And I'm probably going to get charged for tonight whether it's used or not. Anyway, if anyone needs to use it, let me know. Best way to reach me is e-mail if it's before 230pm or after that send a e-mail to my pager zzzz8688940@zzzzskytel.com (to use this address remove the eight extra characters that ought to be obvious.) Just send me an e-mail telling me you want to use it and if there's a way to reach you. If you don't hear from me, feel free to go ahead to the motel and tell them you're using (and paying for) the room that I reserved. The motel is at 1533 Elm St in West Springfield. Phone is 413-734-8278. It's supposed to be about 10 miles from NoHo. See you all tonight. At various times in day-to-day conversations you drop some small reference to a book, or a band, or a movie that you like. It's both a joke that's still funny even if nobody else knows you've made it, and also an opportunity to discover that someone else likes the same little-known stuff that you do. So this Monday I was talking with somebody in a cubicle-farm in my office, and I asked her a question. Something along the lines of "do you know how the robot demo went Friday night?" She replied, "Yes", and walked away, holding up one finger to tell me she'd be back. I called out to her, maybe a little too loudly, "Well HOW did it go?" I paused a few seconds and added "Tell Us, King!" in true Moxy manner. And from over the wall came a bright, loud laugh from somewhere else in the office. That's how I learned I've got a fellow fan in the office. - -Jim Jim Moskowitz | The Franklin Institute Science Museum jimmosk@fi.edu | jimmosk@netaxs.com ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V1 #903 ********************************************
