Huh. From my writing courses, I remember that once something is written, it's AUTOMATICALLY copyrighted to you. Putting the (c) Me, This Year by it is a formality, as far as I know. Of course, if someone *does* try to steal your work, you'd have to demonstrate that you had written it beforehand, which could be problematic. I personally have paid the fees to register my work with the U.S. gov (which is a *laugh*, how long it takes them to get back to you on it), but more for, well, the novelty of it than anything else. I don't know if the law is different in Canada or not. Anyone is certainly welcome to correct me on anything I've said here. My point, though, is that it's not a matter of being legal so much as being ethical. If your posting of lyrics is offensive or unwelcome to a member of the band who wrote said lyrics, wouldn't decency and respect for the band constrain you? It would me. (I'd like to believe that if Fruvous posted, asking us not to do it, the fans here would refrain from doing so; but since no band member has posted to say, "Um, this bothers me, please stop," I can see why other people don't have the compunctions I do on this issue. I'm just speaking from what I *believe* to be true.) ceecee, perching on her soapbox, as usual ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 05:34:31 GMT From: "Aye, who's asking whom?" Subject: Re: King of Spain >Prior to the 40 years that Spain was a republic under Franco, the last king of >spain was named Afonso (XIII?). Just as Italy was not a repblic under Mussolini, Spain was not really a republic under Franco. When Franco died in 1975, Spain came out of an economic coma and, within a decade, had joined the Common Market and NATO. Also, the populace got more than roofs on their heads and food on thier plates -- they became a banking and artistic center. However, all of that is me blathering. A republic is a country in which the citizens elect representatives and the reps do the legisaltion and execution of the results. Franco was a dictator. Canada and the Untied States are republics (in the States, we say we're a democracy, but democracies are more like small New England towns where everyone goes to the town meeting and everyone gets to vote on laws). The United Kingdom, in contrast, is a parliamentary monarchy (the queen permits the parliament to act unfettered, but reserves the powers of the Church and of opening new shopping malls) and has no single constitution as an umbrella of legal powers. I'm sorry, but dictators don't run republics. It's like saying "national socialism" is a form of socialism. - --okay, I'll leave the politics out of it from now on and get back to dancing, Dante ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 02:29:38 -0400 From: "Bell-occhio" Subject: Re: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio > >and CeeCee added: Well, that was me actually. I'll be the girl with the severely short haircut (yes Phil, it's even shorter than it was when you saw me last week), grinning like an idiot...if you want to say hi, Phil can point me out to you if you can't find me :) Wow, I can't wait!
