As I remember, there were more people from Chicago than Wisconsin at that show. (by the way, that show stands out as my favorite Fruvous show, by a landslide). At the same time, I wonder if the band's growing popularity is a precursor to national mainstream popularity. Making it in Chicago means you are halfway between the trendyness of LA and the cutthroat competition of NYC, while capturing the sensibilities of the midwest. And while some may frown upon the comparison, BNL went from a strong following in the northeast to a big following in Chicago, just before breaking out nationaly in the US. I also remember that most people were from out of town. Myself and the two or three people I managed to drag along with me were about half of the people from Wisconsin. Hearing more or less all of YWGTTM live, shortly after the CD was released, never expecting to hear "Gord's Gold" live, and of course that final off mike Gulf War song.... I think that we all really hope that Moxy makes it big; they are so talented that they just have to. BNL seems to be on their way, ironically on the strength of a not very good album. Your parallel between BNL and MF is apt: I think that they also suffered from being pigeon holed as a "novelty" act, and people reacted negatively to their second album. The friends I've talked to in Canada said that Wood killed a lot of Moxy's following, and I must admit that the first time I heard Wood (actually at Martyr's), I didn't like it much, since at that point I had only heard Bargainville.
