Is this Jennifer Kimball the same one that was in The Story? I haven't heard any of her solo stuff, but have picked up Jonatha Brooke's solo releases. How is Jennifer Kimball? While I'm talking music related stuff (when am I not?!?!?) just wanted to mention that over the year or so I've been watching your posts I've noticed you have the best taste in music! I can say that because it is quite similar to mine ;o). And thanks for doing the EFO mailings as well! My McCabe tapes are in the mail! Up until I was 10 yo, I'd never run into another person with my name and it took me another 6 years to run into another female with my name... There's a grip (or at least used to be) of Jordan's on the TMBG mailing list as well... In fact that's how the capitalized J, O, and N in my name came about. We all assumed it was a conspiracy or something with JOhN and JOhN... i dunno... one of the other Jordan's told me to start capitalizing my name that way (so we could distinguish who was who between ourselves) and i just haven't stopped. The entire northeast has very unpredictable weather, and inconsistent seasons. It might be bright sunny and 70 degrees out. Or it might be a blizzard with no visibility and -30 wind chill, so that you can't do much more than 35mph on the interstates. And there's no good way to tell in advance. One day forecasts tend to be accurate most of the time around here. Two day forecasts are a little better than 50/50. Three day forecasts are speculative fiction. Denver to Ithaca or Clinton is probably going to be a two day trip for you, so you can't know what the weather's gonna be before you leave. Oh, and beware of lake-effect fog on the Indiana and Ohio turnpikes (80/90) at night. > also, i'll again ask if there's anyone from colorado interested in going. > jordan, i'd love it if you & buds could go. i'd volunteer my car in > exchange for help with gas $$$$$$, and for a trip that lengthy, i can fit 4 > comfortably. ... and Denver to upstate New York is one of the most boring stretches of road I've ever experienced. Especially I-76 and I-80 until you reach Chicago. If you don't find interesting people to put in your car with you, bring a lot of good music - don't expect to find any decent radio before Illinois, unless you like Christian stations and pop-country. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- WBRS@brandeis.edu http://www.wbrs.org/ "... the intersection of the FCC and Kafka's nightmares is non-empty." -- Tom Slone ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 22:05:34 GMT From: cos@wbrs.org (Ofer Inbar) Subject: "What kind of music do they play?" (you get the > idea). Does anyone else frequently run into this problem? And if so, > how do you go about explaining Fruvous (without sounding as silly as I > did)? Well, not *exactly*, because when someone asks me what my favorite band is, I usually say "Alison Brown Quartet". But I do run into the "how do you describe moxy fruvous" issue rather often, yes. Ever since they played at WBRS in 1996 and I made a copy of that show for myself, I've kept that tape in my backpack. And those of you who know me also know that I hardly ever go anywhere without that backpack. This comes in very handy, if the circumstances allow playing a tape. (This, and my Alison Brown mix tape, are the only ones I *always* carry.) In August, I was driving I-80 across Nevada, and passed near some brush fires shortly before dusk. The closest of them was only about a half mile or so from the road, I think - hard to judge distances there. There was a "Burns Brothers Travel Stop" off to the side of the highway, with a big neon sign on posts a little away from the travel stop itself. A photo opportunity not to be missed! I lined up the sign with the burning desert behind it and stopped to take a picture. The hitchiker I didn't see happened to be such a short distance from where I stopped that he thought I'd stopped for him. He walked up with his guitar and told me his story: On the way from Grand Junction, CO, to Lake Tahoe, CA for a reggae festival, he stopped at the Burns Brothers Travel Stop. He went in the store, got something, and came back out to find his car burning. The engine was literally in flames. And he's got a guitar because he plays bluegrass. So I took him to California. Naturally, we discussed music. And of course we got to the topic of moxy fruvous, who he'd never heard of before. As always, I had the tape. It was perfectly timed - we heard the entire fruvous set and it was done just before I dropped him off. I wonder if he went to any of the recent Colorado shows. There weren't any near Grand Junction that I recall, but if he was willing to drive to Lake Tahoe... Now, if the circumstances are such that you can't play whatever fruvous you've got with you, there's really no shortcut to describing them. That's true with a lot of the bands I like, so I'm used to them. moxy fruvous really is more of a folk band than they are anything else, and their audience is more of a folk audience than anything else. I usually use those words: "a lot of things, but more folk than anything else." Mentioning that they started out street busking helps get across what they're like on stage. Saying that they're not at all like TMBG or BNL, but that fans of both of those bands tend to like them a lot, is sometimes useful. Describing how they come up with impromptu songs on stage is a must. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- Producer, Free Live Music -- booking@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ This could only happen in the life of a cos.
