I'm sure this question has been answered about ten times over at this point but...ah, what the hell! I might as well try to impress SOMEBODY w/my pompous, psuedo-intellectual, useless knowledge (not that any form of knowledge is useless, mind you!).... PANNED & SCANNED refers to, as someone else on the list mentioned, a non-letterboxed form of film format where you, the viewer, is actually seeing less of the movie! "...and those little black bars at the top and the bottom of the screen--man, those things suck! It's like trying to watch one a dem' "black and white" or "subtitled/dubbed" movies...fucking 'Godzilla'!" Yes, well if any of you have watched "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk w/Me" then you've experienced the cheating of PAN & SCAN--esp. the scene towards the end when the angel appears to (I think) Laura Palmer; it descends from the upper corner of the screen but you can only see it from the torso down!!! Thanks to PAN & SCAN, a perfectly good angel gets decapitated in one of the most visually stunning scenes in the movie! Had Woody gone straight to the police--and asked for letterboxed format--this never would have happened! Also PANNING & SCANNING refers to the movement of the camera; the camera moves to where the action is on the screen, cutting out much of the peripheral action, and if you're watching a Zucker, Zucker & Abrahams film, you definitely DON'T want to miss out on the peripherals! There is also a type of filming style called Panavision, which was actually used quite a bit in action movies and westerns or Kurosawa-type films--epic. So if you need a point of reference for schmaltzy 60's film gimmicks, a.k.a. Panavision, Feelaround, Shock-O-Vision, etc., check out TMBG's homage in "Sensurround". Okay, remember what I told you? Good...there'll be quiz on it the following Tues.!
