Ear plugs are recommended for those in Motel 6 with delicate musical sensibilities. (Mind you, I not sure that customs won't class it as an offensive weapon.) I'm the producer whose name is being taken in vain by Gabby, Fiona and Jenn (hi ladies!). I run the Northern Harmony Canadian A Cappella Celebration in Edmonton. (Fiona is generously posting for me because MY system doesn't seem to be interested in this newsgroup) Thank you, Gabby, for the nice push; sorry for running out on you so quickly after the Fruvous show... The Heebee-jeebees, the group we're talking about, is a Calgary-based quartet who sing originals and covers from a unique (twisted) perspective. Since winning Northern Harmony last year (they were back this year as hosts), they went on to be the first Canadian group to reach the finals of the American Harmony Sweepstakes. They also received two nominations in the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (coming in runner up in the Best Xmas Album category). Incidentally, THEY admire - and were proud to lose Best Humorous Song to - Da Vinci's Notebook. Yes, it IS a small world... The 'Jeebees appear on their own CDs, Northern Harmony 1997, the 1998 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards CD, and the live recording of the 1998 U.S. tournament, all of which are available at www.a-cappella.com (as will be, by early 1999, the live recording of NoHarm 1998). They are also working on a new album which rumour has it will be primarily all-original material. While their covers are wonderful, their original music is some of the most creative and funniest stuff I've heard in five years of a cappella. I went to Olympia and then San Francisco with them for their competitions, and they showed Canada to its best light. They are energetic, incredibly creative (Gabby can tell you more about the hysterical off-the-cuff songs they came up with to introduce each of Saturday's competitors, since as producer I never actually SAW any of it...), with wonderful arrangements, and are four of the sweetest guys in a community - a cappella - full of really nice people. Canadian trivia: If you're up at 4:06am EST, 1:06am PST, Sunday-Thursday, turn to CBC Newsworld and watch "Newslink," the show for high schools. The co-host is Ken Lima-Coelho, tenor for the Heebee-jeebees. If you're in Western Canada and interested in knowing more about Northern Harmony, please email me.
