Um, logic would dictate that if something's banned then you can't rent it. "Longue journee..." It seems to me that most of the time when a couple of the guys don't come out (which I think is rare) it's usually because of a crazy travel schedule (like Mike's impressive desire to get back to his family in Toronto right after the Bowery Ballroom show). Certainly lousy promoters don't help (as in Seattle) but that didn't deter the band's interest in thanking people for coming in spite of the venue. (Chatting time was cut short there as the security people stopped even the band from enjoying that last beer of the night and shooed everyone out.) > Since then, they've been acting colder on average. I'm not sure I'd agree with you on this one... But I think it's been a bit more difficult for them to pay personal attention to each and every person or to linger for a long time after a show when there's 200 more stops on the tour. When I first saw Fruvous, about two years ago, the guys were there long after the club closed down, spent time with everyone who was interested in talking to them. Now, they're frequently playing in bigger clubs and have more of us following them around. This is a good thing, but as the population of Fru-fans expands, our expectation of post-show conversation may need to adjust a bit. Or not. This remains to be seen. Having said all this, I am consistently AMAZED that the guys remember a heck of a lot about their fans, like our names. How many headlining artists do that? They've shown an incredible interest in their fans. That's special, rare and wonderful. I'm relatively new at this being-buds-with-the-band thing, but in my limited experience with Fruvous their general accessibility to their fans is phenomenal, although naturally tempered by time constraints. And isn't the access *we* give people to *us* limited by those constraints as well? When I talked to them all at Appel Farm it was right after their set, and they had nothing else scheduled, so they could just kick back and relax and enjoy the conversation and the rest of the day. There were probably two hundred people waiting for autographs, but even so they managed to make each interaction very personal, posing for photos, asking questions, teasing, and in general behaving as though they were just as interested in us as we were in them. And I truly believe they are. If I liked their music before that set, after it I *adored* their friendly, nonsnooty, down-to-earth selves. In Ottawa, at the Luxor they spent a great deal of time after their set talking to various fans. There were some obviously in-depth conversations going on, especially with Mike and Jian, and I really didn't want to interrupt (and I wanted to catch the other acts!) so I just said a quick hi in passing the offstage area. But I could see the dedication there as well, and I was amazed at the personal, friendly relationships they seemed to have with some of you. Definitely not your average ego-ridden band, thought I. Definitely real people, not guys hung up on celebrity and image. The next day, though, they were much more rushed, and at the merch table they just signed their names and made a few seconds' small talk before it became clear it was time to move along and let the next fan in. After Appel Farm's up-close-and-personal experience yes, it did feel a little cooler -- *But*-- that day they really didn't have the time! They had another set at a different stage just one hour later, and so they couldn't -- even given the vagaries of Fruvous Time -- devote themselves to anything in-depth at that point. They also had done two sets the previous night *and* had that wonderfully personal post-set interaction that left this ng buzzing for days. If some people on the ng didn't get to sleep until 5 a.m., then it's probable that the band didn't either. I saw Tobey schlepping stuff on the Frumobile after 2 a.m., and at that point the guys were still in the restaurant holding court. I really think we have to cut these guys a break. We might be cruising around from concert to concert, grooving to the music and enjoying the sights and people we encounter, but they are the ones who work to make it all possible. We need to acknowledge that sometimes they might feel tired, or rushed, or preoccupied with something, that they all might not be fully "on" at each and every gig, that each of them has a life beyond Moxy Fruvous and sometimes something in that life might be more important than the music, the gigs, and the fans. And we really need to remember that they do not owe us this attention. They give us rollicking concerts and a new CD each year, and that's generally all any fan can expect of his/her favorite artists. So if at some time one or more of them can't be as outgoing as usual -- well, what other celebrity would any of us expect that kind of gracious attention from? I can't name one. And I think we're more than lucky fans. I think they spoil us rotten. Not that I'm complaining!
