I asked my mother and she said the shirt she would first think of when she thought of me was my "I Love Canadian Boys" shirt. (aside, another funny story about that shirt, I didn't wear it to the Birchmere because it was in the wash, and when I told Tobey that "it wasn't clean yet" I think he thought I said "I wasn't lean yet" because he gave me this little lecture/pep talk about "leaness being all in your mind...You wear that shirt, if you like it, wear it!!" What a sweet guy : ) Anyway, so I did wear that shirt but I think all the lettering got cut out of the actual pic. But later that day a guy who sits behind me in English tapped me on the shoulder and asked me "Who is Moxy Frrrru Moxy Frrrivolous?" I then of course preceeded to rave about them and tell him they were coming to our hometown of Wilmington on November 11th. Ah, yet another amusing little anecdote inspired by my beloved baby-tee. ~Joni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Oct 1998 10:46:29 -0400 From: Chad Schrock Subject: Re: In between shows Nate DeRose wrote: > FruWench wrote: > > 2) Ben and Jerry's, yum. This is starting to sound like the social event at last year's USENIX conference in Sandy Eggo. They held a costume ball and everyone was supposed to dress up like their favorite UNIX program. It was *very* interesting. It's so cool to be able to experience a distant performance vicariously through others. You did a pretty good job of making me feel like I was there, and I sure wish I was. >I dunno, perhaps i've just been seeing the wrong bands, but when the >members are cool to their fans it just makes me like the bands that >much >more... We Fru-fans truly get special treatment from the band. I know (and I'm sure they know) that the way they treat everyone has a lot to do with why many of us go back to show after show. Lately though I've been worrying that as the fan base grows it's going to get harder and harder for Fruvous to come out after every show and greet each of us. Worrying because I'm not sure all of us are ready to deal with that. I know that a couple of times in the past it's gotten a few people peeved when band members haven't all come out and mingled for a while. We're so wonderfully spoiled. I don't have any reason to think that's going to become the norm, but I'm starting to think that we need to recognize that mingling with fans is or at least can be as hard a job as performing on stage... sometimes the guys might just be wiped out and not feel like coming out. Especially if there's 50 or more people crowding around to shake hands or get autographs or whatever. I'm not exactly sure what I'm thinking we should do differently, except maybe realize that these guys work really hard and that we're the beneficiaries. Lately though I've been worrying that as the fan : base grows it's going to get harder and harder for Fruvous to come out after : every show and greet each of us. Worrying because I'm not sure all of us are : ready to deal with that. Well, for me, my main motivation for coming back to show after show is mainly the fans. The lads have always put on a great performance and I love seeing them live. I use that so I can go see new cities and areas of the country and hang out with some very cool and very special people, obstensibly known as the FruHeads. For me, I've met the band two or three times now. I've had my head rubbed by Jian, I've chatted with Murray, joked with Mike and Dave. Meeting them is not such a big deal anymore. At IH, I may say "hey!" to them, but other than helping to get Chrissy talking to Jian, and maybe getting a pic with Jian rubbing my head like he did in Ft. Smith (for posterity's sake and for the fact it'll freak some of my coworkers out), I'm not going to be going out of my way to talk with them after the show. As for the fan base growing, I fear it is an inevitability that they won't be able to have nearly the audience and fan interaction that everyone has enjoyed in the past. However, when that happens I am sure Moxy Fruvous will adapt to handle it. : I know that a couple of times in the past it's gotten a few people peeved when : band members haven't all come out and mingled for a while. We're so : wonderfully spoiled. I'm reminded of the Rush song "Limelight". I won't put the whole lyrics here, you can read them at http://syrinx.yyz.com/RUSH/09.mp.html but this lyric strikes to the heart of the matter. "One must put up barriers, to keep oneself intact."
