Torontonians commonly say "Tronno" (or even "Tronna") : Calgarians say "Calgree" : Vancouverites say "Vang-couver", etc. : Well, not all of them do, of course, it just seems that once you've : lived in a city for a while you don't care as much how it's pronounced. : Just a theory. If there's a word that you say on a regular basis (such as the name of the city you live in) it's pronunciation gets changed to be easier to say. For example, that first vowel in "toronto" goes away, and the "uh" sound at the end of "calgary" goes away, and the "en" sound in "vancouver" becomes an "eng" sound because "eng" is made in close to the same place in your mouth as the "k" in "couver", so it's physically easier to say. There's a technical term for this, but I've forgotten it. Drat. (There are places around here where that happens too. Mountirn instead of Mountain Iron and Nordeast instead of Northeast.) betsy. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 15:50:31 GMT From: fairest one Subject: Re: Frudegreens On Thu, 01 Oct 1998 12:48:08 -0500, Josh Drury warbled: : nafio@my-dejanews.com wrote: :> :> I gotta admit, for the longest time I thought it was "common" too. *G* Must :> have something to do with the Canadian accent.. we add "o"'s in everywhere :> (or so an American friend told me when I explained that an American accent is :> identifiable by the use of "a" in place of most vowels. That, of course, didn't help. : Appologies in advance to all Minnesotians who speak normally, I'm sure : it's not so universal. Minnesotans do have an accent. We sound almost like Canadians except slightly less weird. Seriously though, it's true. At least the "almost like Canadians" bit. There's a phenomenon known as "canadian raising" which is a lot of the minnesotan accent, and is a much stronger part of a stereotypical canadian accent. I was up in Winnipeg in May for my honeymoon, and I ran into one or two people who had such a strong accent that I couldn't even understand them without asking them to repeat themselves. My brain just won't process the sounds correctly. Oh, well. :) betsy, in minnesota. ------------------------------ Date: 2 Oct 1998 16:21:47 GMT From: aleigh992@aol.comNOSPAM (ALeigh992) Subject: Fru-Reference in Washington Post okay, so it's not a big reference...I still thought it was pretty cool that they were mentioned...In the Weekend section of the washington post, there's an article about the Tragically Hip album, and it says "Like many Canadian bands, the Tragically Hip have a facetious name, but they're not in the same category as Barenaked Ladies or Moxy Fruvous [sic]" and then goes on to compare the tragically hip to R.E.M. "without the experimental tendencies." Well, I thought it was pretty cool that they were mentioned, even if most of the mass public down here don't know who they are :-) Aleigh Check it out! I had said that I thought 10 was a reasonable minimum. Close enough, I say. But of course if anyone else wants to contribute, just email me to say so. My address is gaspar.11@sympatico.ca. Those who participated in the vote (paper vs html) opted for paper--it's easier to lug around the kitchen. So. To all cooks participating in this wondrous event, do not mail the recipes to me yet. I want to check out prices so I can let you know the cost of one such a book. Any troubles, you'll hear from me, believe me ;) Irene the Foodfan and Recipe Crusader ------------------------------ Date: 2 Oct 1998 17:10:39 GMT From: jsmooth69@aol.com (JSmooth69) Subject: Re: Recipe book? <> I would like to contribute to the recipe book, and also I would prefer a printed version of it which would, IMHO, be cooler. We did some booklets using the plastic comb type bindings and sturdy decorative covers that were relatively inexpensive but I can't remember how much. A lot depends on volume also. Irene, what type of printing/binding were you thinking of? Since the guys are famous for doing very 'interesting' setlists at IH, if you could suggest one song (Fruvous or otherwise) for the setlist, what would it be?
