Hmmm..... Welp, I've been away for awhile -- I'm thinking of coming to play the weekend of Halloween -- is there some hotel or hostel or somesuch that fans are gathering in? I'd prob be heading it alone -- so I'd rather know I'm meeting up with people somewhere once I've gone the 12 or so hours :) *smooch! Well that depends. Apparently, the producers of The Rutles didn't get licenses to use the copyrighted works. Especially in the early days of the modern Copyright Act (1976), contradictory rulings were given out over unlicensed parodies. The most recent, famous Supreme Court case dealing with this was in 1994 (Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc.) over whether or not 2 Live Crew's parody of "Pretty Woman" violated copyright protection on Roy Orbison's song. It was found that 2 Live Crew's song was substantially different from the original, targetted toward a diiferent audience and therefore not harmful to the marketability of the original, and created not only to parody Orbison's song itself but also to satirize ideas connoted by the original. Oh well. Even though I made sure I was quoting USAian laws in a context where it made sense (since The Rutles was produced by an American company), I'm sure most Canadians here are sick of Americans spouting off about their own First Amendment and other laws as if everyone on Usenet is governed by them. And I doubt anyone here likes 2 Live Crew anyway. I think I'll shut up now. - --brian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 21:20:22 GMT From: "Nowik, George" Subject: RE: Live Noise > ---------- > From: Ross Dickinson[SMTP:rdickinson@monmouth.com] > Subject: Live Noise > > I'm a relatively new fan(ok like 2 weeks or so) and I jus tbought "You > Will Go To The Moon". There are some songs on there from You Will Go to the Moon as well and they are fun to listen to (one in particular that is done in a different style). Trust me, you will enjoy "the goods." -= george =- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 21:52:20 GMT From: nafio@my-dejanews.com Subject: Re: 3 Days/3 Provinces/3 Time Zones/2 Shows: Trip Diary of an 'Internet Wingnut' Part 1 (long) Marie.Claude@canada.com wrote: > Oh god. (Sitting down, but the Pisco Dance nonetheless) It's kind of ironic, really, making the song into a "while we hunt for this fish let's talk about it/praise it?" sort of thing. I think it's especially good for someone who hasn't seen Moxy live, it'll give you an idea of what their concerts are like. So yes, I would reccomend running, not walking, to your local HMV and picking it up.
