In stages, starting about a year ago when I heard them on WXPN's "Kid's Corner" (listening with my 9-year-old). They got him to ask me what entropy was, and I thought that was cool. Then I mistakenly thought they were the creators of TMBG's "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" which also amuses me inordinately. While trying to figure out what else they really did (besides Michigan Militia and KOS, also in rotation on 'XPN) I bumped into them at Appel Farm, and the rest as they say was history. Unlike Trevor I happen to agree with most of their politics, I find their humor wonderful (I think if they're not actually the South Park kids then SP must be modeled on them. Let's see: there's four of them; the kids in SP all wear tuques or parkas -- yeah, they say they're from Colorado, but I think they're Canucks; Fruvous can't get through a concert without uttering the word "ass"; and have you ever seen all eight of them in the same place at once?) But I digress. At Appel Farm I too was impressed with the lads as really, genuinely nice people, as witty in person one-on-one as onstage. Picked up Live Noise that day, had them all sign it, and in Canada picked up the other 4 albums. (Of all albums, "b" is the one in the stereo the most at this point. It's a great wakeup CD.) I saw them at King of Prussia and was impressed with the quality of the show they gave that night under far-than-ideal circumstances. My favorite song at the moment is one of the new ones they've been playing at gigs this summer, I Will Hold On. Jian's voice is amazing on this one. But I like most of them, particularly the clever, topical ones. I absolutely adore the Kids Song and Ash Hash, for example. Who else do I like? Oh, all sorts of weird things ... world beat, Cajun/zydeco, Celtic; native American. Name acts I enjoy include: Richard Seguin, a quebecois rock balladeer; Kashtin, a Micmac duo; Billy Joel, Springsteen (can't be a Philly native and not like Springsteen); Neil Young; Patty Griffin; REM, Great Big Sea and Barenaked Ladies. Local band Huffamoose is also a current fave. (and that addresses another topic: local bands worth watching.) Instead of opening or main acts, what I'd like to see is a Busking Canuck festival or tour with Fruvous, BNL, GBS and TMBG all together. Or Vance Gilbert could open for the boys any day, then stay onstage if he wanted. The ng is cool as an information disseminator and general amusement/obsession tool. I found it because FDC hasn't been updated in 3 weeks (and what's going on there? Anyone?) and I was desperate for current info. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 20:23:42 -0400 From: Summer Young Subject: Re: Canadian Cuisine hKatherine@ehmail.com wrote: > In article <6t7ojh$406$2@knot.queensu.ca>, > Revell Sara E <4ser4@qlink.queensu.ca> wrote: > > > Hey, is anyone interested in starting a thread on the various > > explanations of the name Moxy Fruvous that have been done at > > shows? Parent assimilation is fairly simple, provided one chooses the correct instrument. My mom took all of 3 minutes, with the application of "Greatest Man in America." Children, however, are tougher, because even if every other child in the universe adores Fruvous, if yours becomes aware that *you* like Fruvous, he/she instantly will not. Must confess I'm surprised they remember their banter -- Moxy Fruvous amazes me once again. - -- Lori ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 20:53:19 -0400 From: Summer Young Subject: Re: =?ISO Latin 1?Q?The_state_of_being_Fr=FCvous?= Geenius at Wrok wrote: > What is the correct noun to describe the state of being Früvous? Look for a bespectacled brunette in a gray MF T-shirt and a black beanie. The unfortunate thing is that I won't have much in the way of donations because I only found out this week. (I guess my real United Way collecting will have to be for the CN Tower stair climb. Now, *that's* going to hurt.) I, however, have only seen and heard the song once (a couple years ago), which is why (as I mentioned in my other post relating to this) I never should've opened my big mouth before having my facts straight.
