I wish that one was on an album... *sigh/chuckle* And the Mounted Animal Nature Trail is just hilarious (especially live). But if you want REAL entertainment, get into a van with about six other people and sing along to Rippy the Gator over and over and over and over and....... then again, don't. Ingrid - -- "I'm 34. Since we all respect your tastes (now that you've abandoned hot pink) we know he must be great. Everyone envies your new relationship. Very nice on a cold winter night. The Blooming Onion is right beside where I work in the Market. Poutines from those kinds of places are the best, always. Done talking about poutine. Will probably have one for lunch, though ;) Ingrid - -- "I'm 34. While I haven't seen a Fruvous show at such a venue, I have seen lots of shows in theatre venues, and basically you just stand up and dance in the space you have. You're not really expected to sit down in most of them, and the fact that the audience is raked gives everybody a better view than on a flat space. On the other hand, there are venues such as Alexandria, VA's Birchmere where they expect you to remain seated and quiet during the show out of respect to the artist. These shows can still be fun, but they're frustrating because you want to get up and dance. I wrote a letter about it. Okay, a lot of us were dissatisfied about Chopper and other frustrating things at the Ottawa Folk Fest (even though the rest of it was great, really it was!) So, I wrote a little letter to the Citizen on behalf of everyone who got pissed off that weekend. This is how it appeared yesterday. It's not exactly the way I wrote it (you'll notice the bit about technical crews seems weird -- and I don'T know what kind of party or gathering a "Moxy Fruvous" is... but anyway, here it is): Ottawa Citizen, Tuesday, September 8, 1998 FOLK FESTIVALS SHOULD ALLOW FANS TO DANCE As a regular at folk festivals throughout Ontario, I've always found their atmosphere to be quite peaceful and friendly. This is why, when 20 or so of us got up to dance during the Moxy Früvous, we made sure that the stage was high enough that people sitting in lawn chairs and on the ground behind us would miss only what was happening below the performers' kneecaps. This has been a problem before. At Summerfolk in Owen Sound, for example, the stage is low to the ground and seating is limited,so a "no dancing" rule has been understandably enforced. However, with an elevated stage and a vast amount of space in front of it, the patrons of the Ottawa Folk Festival should be allowed to stand, dance and freely enjoy the music. Throughout the evening performance, my friends and I danced and none of the people behind us or members of festival security told us that we were bothering anyone. If they had, we would have surely sat down or moved to a less prominent spot. After the concert, as emcees Chopper McKinnon and Karen Flanagan McCarthy took the stage, a few of my friends reached up onto the stage in an attempt to grab a set-list as a souvenir. Obviously, bands no longer need these, and they usually will whole-heartedly autograph them after a show. Their technical crews generally make it a practice to hand out lists to concertgoers on request. But one friend was told to put the paper back, and when she didn't it was snatched from her hand and was probably discarded. There isn't much else to do with a used scrap of notebook paper. Someone else had her hand stepped on by Mr. McKinnon in an attempt to dissuade her. He never even stopped talking while he was doing it. Needless to say, we were appalled. And our dismay grew the next day when an announcement from the main stage called for a ban on dancing. As an explanation, authorities stated that the previous night, fans of Moxy Früvous had gotten rowdy, climbed onstage and tried to steal things. Now, I don't mind that the festival authorities seemed to attack my friends and me for behaviour that seemed perfectly natural at any other concert or festival, but associating this allegedly improper behaviour with the band in question was just a low blow. As an avid supporter of Moxy Früvous, I feel the need to encourage them, not contribute to their having a bad reputation for any reason, especially one which has nothing to do with anything they have done. Moxy Früvous is a "grass roots" kind of band whose success depends a lot on word of mouth, reputation and the loyalty of fans like us. Bad press like this isn't very good for business. I implore the Ottawa Folk Festival to modify the festival plan next year to include a dancing area. Maybe more people will want to dance if they know it's an option. I'd also like to propose an attitude-check for Mr. McKinnon. Anyone who would step on another person's hand to protect a piece of paper needs to seriously re-examine his priorities. It may be no exaggeration to say that the festival has outgrown him.
