Let me note right here that I am NOT promoting the views of the Pro-Life movement, and I am NOT speaking out against the views of the Pro-Choice movement. I do not fully agree with either of these movements. The purpose of my posts on this thread are to clarify the dilemma of an MF fan who wants to attend concerts, but realizes that some of these concerts are for causes not within this person's interest. One person posted, noting that they were "sorry" that MF was doing a show that directly disagreed with their own beliefs. I am simply trying to help you understand what they meant by that. I will not reply to any political arguments, unless they directly involve the origin of this thread. That said, on with my reply: >i dont know about you, but i love shows that are for "causes", it brings a >whole new level of enjoyment to me to know that i am not only seeing a band i >love, but am helping a cause i agree with. i guess it has to do with one's >personal convictions regarding the specific cause, if fruvous was playing a >show benifiting...um, lets say, the legalization of uzi's ( i dont know where >my thoughts come from) i would not attend, Therein lies my only point here. Sure, it's nice if the show is for a cause you believe in, but if it's something that's *against* what you believe in, then this is a whole different story. No one *wants* to attend a show if that show's cause is against their belief system. There's also the drive to see the band, though. So, one just needs to choose between the two. My choice is to see the band without contributing anything to the cause. >Chad Maloney typed: >Look, the band chooses what they do with the money you give them. You believe >in >what you think so much that you won't attend a ProChoice benefit. Yet you >try to talk Fruvous out of raising money for what they believe in. That's >a pretty big double standard there, Novac. Dude, please quit jumping on people. In fact, I said that I *would* attend a PC benefit to see MF, but I wouldn't contribute anything. Yes, I give money to MF via CD purchases and the like, but I'm paying them for great music. That's much different than giving them cash and saying "here...go promote abortion centers and the like". What MF does with the money I give them is up to them. No double standards here... - --Novac "There are two rules for success in life: 1) Don't tell everything you know;" -- Tom Magliozzi ------------------------------ Date: 15 Aug 1998 04:32:44 GMT From: ourhamster@aol.com (OurHamster) Subject: Re: Fw: F&F for C (was Re: FruCon II) [See DISCLAIMER on other thread before replying] >the band wants the money to go to the organization. they could have chosen >to do a show where they would get the proceeds. then they could write the >check to the organization. would that make you feel better? the point is, >it is their choice. Actually, yes it would. That way, it would be their decision, and not mine. I'd be giving money to a great band, and they'd be giving money to the PC movement. >> --Novac's going, but not giving any money to this cause... >i find this really rude and disrespectful. >you are disrespecting that wish by going without paying for the show. Rude and disrespectful? Perhaps. If I went without paying for the show, I'd be sure to buy some merch to help out the band. I have no problems with failing to donate money to political organizations. >either pay for the ticket or don't go. If the show was a cause that *you* didn't agree in, what would you do? What if it was in your hometown? No response required here...just something to think over... But, if there's a ticket to be bought, I wouldn't attend the show. My conception was that a "suggested donation" would be taken at the door, or something of the like. This is the setup I was referring to when I said I wouldn't pay any money. - --Novac "There are two rules for success in life: 1) Don't tell everything you know;" -- Tom Magliozzi ------------------------------ Date: 15 Aug 1998 05:16:26 GMT From: Bookrat Subject: Re: woohoo! If I haven't mistyped, the interview is available in RealAudio format at http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/980814.atc.06.ram The version of "Jonny Saucep'n" that was played on this segment was at least 50% faster than the recording on the B Album. Me, I'm psyched by the fact that I'll soon have my first opportunity to really frouve since last year at Schwenksville. Oooh, I'm jealous... *grin* Well, actually, I'm not - have a wonderful time, everyone, but I'm already a bit travelled out for the summer. A vacation at the folx' place is actually a nice thing once in a very long while... But - back to the thread's subject. Thought I'd drop some Italian authors' names for ya. Some of it is actually vaguely Fru-related - Dave seems to like Italo Calvino, whom he's mentioned more 'n once. So here we go: Italo Calvino - trilogy: The Cloven Viscount, The Nonexistent Knight, The Baron In The Trees. Actually, these were written as separate books, but meant to have a common thread going through them. Nobody can agree on what that thread is. :) I'd start with the last one, actually. Very cool fairy tale for adults. Sibilla Aleramo - A Woman. Now, this... I don't know if it was ever translated into English. But great feminist book, and not in-your-face so. Just a book about the life of a woman, and her thoughts and such. I love it, anyway. Pier Paolo Pasolini - Roman Poems. Hard to find, but an excellent book of poetry by possibly *the* most controversial Italian writer and filmmaker. Amazing person. He died in the 70s, at the age of 40-something, at the hands of a... a violent lover, let's say. My brain is fried. So that's it. Go watch an Italian film or something. *grin* Okay, I'm partial. - -- Vika [VEE-kah] Patron Saint of Caffeine dacilen@bu.edu "Every little child learns, if you can't see dreams your eyes are blind." -MF ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V1 #303 ********************************************
