OK, here's a question... My friends in the Bay Area, who've been waiting *forever* to hear these Fru-lads they keep hearing about, report that the big ticket agency (I think it's called 'Bass') says the show at Slim's will be on Monday, September 28. FDC, of course, puts them somewhere (unstated) in western Canada on the 28th. Somebody -- either the ticket guys or Fruvous -- has it wrong. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 18:27:00 GMT From: aeves@alpha.confederationc.on.ca Subject: Books for Frutripping2 (Or, "Oops! forgot some" :>) In seeing some of the other authors mentioned, I realized I'd forgotten some of my other favourite writers *blush*! SF/Fantasy: Guy Gavriel Kay - very cool Cdn writer, I highly recommend his "Fionavar Tapestry" series, as well as any of his other books. L. Ron Hubbard - I may not agree with his beliefs, but he writes damn good (and funny) sf. Also Anne McCaffery, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and a few of the other writers mentioned by other people :) (At this rate we'll have a Frutrip library! *grin*) Action/Spy: John LeCarre (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is one of my favourites) There was another post where the topic of "classic literature" came up...the only "classics" I read now are Great Expectations and Jane Eyre, as well as Shakespeare (though there's *no* way you could carry that book on a trip ;>), Tennyson, and Browning. (No, most of my English courses in university weren't British writers, not at all *lol*) As for the 'when do you have time to read?' question that arose.. some of us have 1.5hr flights to get through before we get anywhere close to Frushows, not to mention dates that are 8hrs or more away by bus. I'd say that gives us time! :) (Too bad we can't do a survey of what's read in the Frubus, they'd be the experts on something like this) Hope this helps those of us who have to travel long distances! :) Drea P.S. If anyone can get their hands on the Matt Helm series by Donald Hamilton (action/spy) please let me know? I haven't read any of those books in years and they seem to be impossible to find, even in second hand bookstores :( - -----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/rg_mkgrp.xp Create Your Own Free Member Forum ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 15:09:14 -0400 From: Taylor Subject: Re: Good Date Band?? As regards to all-ages shows... My first intro to the fruvous flag was at with about 10 other friends at school in Pittsburgh... One friend from Buffalo regaled us with stories of this great band until we decided to go. Unfortunately, we found out at the door that it was 21 and over. Not to be dissuaded, Amy (the true fruhead), myself and another friend went to the back and managed to get in the band entrance. What a show... :) Feeling a little guilty about robbing them of whatever portion of the cover charge they might have gotten, we introduced ourselves after the show and talked for quite some time. then spent lots of money at the merchandise table. :) So sneak your friends on in! They'll be lifetime fans. :) - -t - -- Taylor Wray 334 South Street twray@segosf.hlo.dec.com Shrewsbury, MA 01545 Compaq Computer Corporation (508) 841-3668 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 15:50:42 -0400 From: Maige Subject: All Things Considered -- NE PA Area All Things Considered is scheduled to air at 5pm ET on WVIA Radio 89.9 FM Other stations in the NE PA area include: NE PA 89.9 FM * Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg 94.3 FM * Allentown 99.3 FM * Lewisburg 100.1 FM * Sunbury 105.7 FM * Williamsport 89.3 FM * Clarks Summit 90.3 FM * Bethlehem 105.7 FM * Pottsville 94.9 FM Always... - Maige (Misty) ;P - -- *************************************** "To be different is to suffer at the hands of the normal." Also highly recommened (makes you > take another look at the world type book)!!!! I'm really sorry about all this negativity I'm exuding, but Tom Robbins (I've read two of his books) is another guy who imho is so enamored of himself that he gets difficult to read. It's all like "Look at how WEIRD I'm being! Isn't this SO COOL? Don't you just LOVE me??" A lot of times it's almost literally that way, as he does tend to address the audience. So this won't be just a bashing other peoples' tastes post I'll mention Joseph Heller. He's groovey. Rave on. Am I allowed violent disagreement? I violently disagree with the Piers Anthony selection. I used to like him when I was little but now I really consider him degenerate. Pay attention to the way he treats women. Also the guy is just _tooin love with himself. Douglas Adams is my all time favorite Sci fi novelist & I have the original BBC radio shows on tape which are genius & also handy for driving. So he always comes with me. Terry Pratchett is also really cool & always easy to read. My sisters would make me say David Brin. I like Peter David's stuff (he also writes good comic books). For realistic women & good writing & not science fiction (unless you count the Handmaid's Tale I guess) is Margaret Atwood (of MBLABOA fame). If the Spice Girls & their pseudofeminism depress you, she's a real, thinking feminist. As far as mysteries, I'm very fond of Julie Smith, Martha Grimes & Colin Bateman.
