Haven't *technically* followed the list of MBLABOA, but being a product of the Canadian school system, I've probably read something from each of them, if I really thought about it. I just wanted to put my two cents worth in and recommend Robertson Davies' Deptford Trilogy. Required reading for high school english, but surprisingly enough I still really enjoyed the book and fell in love with his work. You also can't go wrong with Jane Austen :) Veronica - -- ------------------------------ Date: 14 Aug 1998 12:25:17 GMT From: Revell Sara E <4ser4@qlink.queensu.ca> Subject: Re: Books for Frutripping? We were forced to read this high school, and my apologies, but I just didn't get it (that's not to say it's not a good book, just my opinion). Maybe it would be a better book if I went back and read it now. I've just had to read three books for english classes in university that I read in high school, and I had very different opinions of them. So I shouldn't judge - life experiences can change your perpective on a book. : * Alias Grace -- Margaret Atwood I LOVE this book - especially the fact that since it was set in both Kingston and Toronto (for a small part), I could totally picture the action. I think my favourite Atwood book is still "The Robber Bride" though. : /*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/ : "Condoms aren't completely safe. Get in the 90's. Literally, like virtually and cleave, is one of those words whose multitude of definitions include its own antonym. Literally can mean "for real", and it can mean, as in this case "metaphorically". At worst, we can call it questionable or unclear usage. But lets not get our dander up over such minor gramatical quibbles. If you would like to be militant about your grammer, how about atacking some of the "less-not-fewer" folks? Or, we can go after my pet peeve, modifying 'unique.' Unique is unique, by definition. You cannot have a comparative or superlative unique. There is no "more unique" or "most unique". There is just unique. C'mon, Miriam, will you join in my militant grammarian crusade against modifying Unique? Please, lets not waste your militancy on questionable matters, lets waste it on more meaningful pursuits! Grammiarians of the world, unite! This is the most unique battle we will ever face!
