I also have a very strong feeling, based on my limited observations (I've seen some shows, heard some cds, and stood around while my Iranian friend had a conversation with Jian--in Persian) that if he were to read this particular thread Jian would (a) have a good laugh, and (b) wonder where we all get the time to sit around speculating about his sexual orientation etc. Or maybe I'm projecting, who knows.... Count me in on the Sleepy Drinker loving list. It's got a kinda slow bar drawl to it that is just so great. I haven't heard it in awhile, but I think Jian's stirring on the brushes and hopefully highlighting the hi-hat. Not that I'm biased or anything. . . Okay, I don't know how any of that works either, but here's a guess. There are two kinds of singles. There's promo singles which go to the radio station for free and usually just have one song on it. It's kinda "please play me" sorta thing. There are also Promo whole CDs which have recommended tracks for airplay recommended on them. Then there are actual singles that are more for the fans. They have b-sides that contain other things, maybe unleased tunes that didn't make the cut at the last recording studio session. I many Ben Folds Five CDs like that (which is why Naked Baby Photos wasn't so exciting for me =). Morphine has those too, and TMBG, and a couple BNL ones. Of course, I don't know if that is actually true. But it wouldn't make much sense to me to send a single with an Album track on one side and then some other assorted things that didn't even make it on an album to a radio station. Come to think of it, all my Indigo Girls singles are of the promo variety. Just one album track. Someone else (I don't remember who) pointed out that most of the new songs seem reasonably radio friendly. I'd agree mostly. They are still a little more complex than most radio songs. I Will Hold On is the tune with the really groovin' part, isn't it? - Chad ------------------------------ Date: 10 Aug 1998 23:16:29 GMT From: snonsumr@aol.com (Snonsumr) Subject: Good Date Band?? following the question presented on Live Noise... i think that Fruvous is a good date band. (no, really!) now, maybe it's 'cause i usually meet guys & end up going to Fruvous shows as a 1st (or 2nd) date. but i happen to think that shows are great dates. it's definitely a night's worth of entertainment & way better than dinner & a movie. honestly, your date doesn't have to be a Fruhead either... i personally have started my own Fru-following in Slippery Rock, PA through conversion. (btw, how about playing an all ages show in Pittsburgh sometime, guys?? i have 2 friends under 21 who would love to see you live.) back to my point, the music is so infectious (in a good way) that anyone would have a good time there. so, next time, bring a date. that's how i finally saw the lads in concert. they'll have a great time. just a thought. - -Snow In Summer (that girl that was w/ Starfox in Toronto) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Aug 1998 23:27:42 GMT From: nafio@my-dejanews.com Subject: Re: Mel Lastman Square Review (longish) > So, here's a question from someone who knows little about singles & > stuff. Not that I'm biased or anything. . . Singles don't have to be sold in record shops, I know that some bands simply release certain songs to radio, but figure they wouldn't make enough money off of a CD or tape copy to justify producing one to sell. I Will Hold On is very much a mainstream song, one that could potentially have a lot of staying power on radio and video, giving people a chance to hear the name Moxy Fruvous and asociate it with good music. I agree that it could leave people unprepared for a show which would include.. er practically all the fast stuff and a good deal of the slow stuff too. But if it gets people who wouldn't otherwise hear of Fruvous interested in them, it would be a start. Unlike King of Spain, I Will Hold On certainly wouldn't have them fighting off "novelty act" status. However if they did put it out as a CD single, and the single had say.. a cut from Live Noise like Boo Time, maybe throw in a short "new" recording like Peace of Mind/Buy Our Disc (to encourage ppl to buy the album of course) and Pisco Bandito or another of the fast, fun songs off the next album whatever that may be, it would give new fans a taste of the whole experience and different styles that Fruvous use... ease them in so to speak. (I agree with Bill, Pisco could be a single on its own. Later. And yes, it is typical for singles to have 3-5 songs. Unfortunately sometimes they're just 5 versions of the same song. But Fruvous would never be that boring) Some people have to take time to wrap their minds around things like Johnny Saucep'n or Your New Boyfriend. I know when I mention Fruvous to other net pals and then throw one of my faves at them (which tend to be the stranger ones) they back off. Fruvous are very atypical of the mainstream even if they are the best pop band going IMHO. Fiona (getting off the soap box.
