Someone once described it to me as "burnt sasparilla," and that seems the closest I've heard yet. ceecee ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Aug 1998 04:47:09 GMT From: ceelove@ibm.net (Colleen Campbell) Subject: Re: Toronto On 7 Aug 1998 23:34:14 GMT, shweiss17@aol.com (SHWeiss17) wrote: >Yeah, but guess what! Like I wasn't already psyched.... Well, the ping pong and harmonica lesson sound really cool (I could especially go for the harp playing--not that I think I'd be any great shakes at it, but it would be great to hear John "blow, wind, blow." But for the record, Alana's recording of "32 Flavors" is not only written by Ani DiFranco (and vastly inferior to Ani's version) but changed lyrics without permission. Ani was royally pissed. Y'all have a whammo time in Toronto, everybody give each other hugs from me and, hell, gossip all you want about me, enjoy Fruvous and the Paperboys and Tory Cassis if you can fit him in, and I'll be thinking about you in between Ani, Dar, Marc Cohn, Loudon Wainwright. . . ceecee, ------------------------------ Date: 8 Aug 1998 05:13:05 GMT From: gorbitron@aol.com (Gorbitron) Subject: Six Degrees of Moxy Fruvous I have been reading all the posts recently about all these "Fruvous related bands" and I had an interesting thought. Interesting to me at least - I will leave it up to you to decide if it is interesting to you. Can you relate Moxy Fruvous to any other band in six steps or less? I think we can. So I challenge all of you to try this out. Rules: 1. Opening for or having Moxy Fruvous as an opening act does qualify as a Fruvous related band, but can only be used a starting point for Fruvous. You cannot use it to connect any other bands. Playing in the same festival as Moxy Fruvous does not qualify as a relation. 2. You are allowed to flow into other types of media. In other words, to go from Moxy Fruvous to the Bacon Brothers (featuring Kevin Bacon of course because someone was going to ask me to relate Moxy Fruvous to Kevin Bacon eventually): Moxy Fruvous has Dave Matheson as a member. Dave Matheson was in Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! as was Michael Pare. Michael Pare was in Streets of Fire with Bill Paxton. Bill Paxton was in Apollo 13 with Kevin Bacon. Kevin Bacon is a member of the Bacon Brothers. ...or to connect with Tom Petty... Moxy Fruvous sang backup on If I Had $1,000,000 by the Barenaked Ladies. They were on 90210 with Jason Priestly (he also directed the video for Old Apartment). Jason Priestly appeared in a video for a Roy Orbison song (I Drove All Night). Roy Orbison and Tom Petty were both in the Traveling Willburys. 3. You can use artists that Moxy Fruvous has covered regularly within their set provided they perform the artist's music as a significant portion off the song. In other words, you can use Abba and Lou Reed for Dancing Queen, but you cannot use B-52s, Jewel or Crosby Stills Nash and Young for Love Potion #9. (I will allow the BeeGees for Staying Alive however). Again, you only use this as a Fruvous jumping off point - you cannot use other band's cover songs (unless they cover Fruvous!) There was a popular game on progressive rock newsgroups at about the same time the Kevin Bacon thing was getting big - but it was Six degrees of Bill Bruford. Except this had to be bands or artists Bill Bruford actually performed with as opposed to just being "related." I will now attempt to relate Moxy Fruvous to Bill Bruford as an example of how a cover song can be used (I didn't try this before I typed it): Moxy Fruvous often covers Stevie Wonder songs (Signed Sealed Delivered and Mistra Know-It-All). Stevie Wonder recorded a duet with Paul McCartney (Ebony and Ivory). Paul McCartney recorded duets with Michael Jackson (Say Say Say and The Girl Is Mine). Trevor Rabin played guitar on Michael Jackson's HIStory Part I. Trevor Rabin and Bill Bruford were both in Yes. 5. On-stage jamming or guest performances can be used at all times for all artists, but don't make anything up please. For example, you can connect Fruvous with Weird Al, but you can't connect them because Billy Idol sang lead on River Valley one night in Oswego. Above all, have fun with this! Maybe this will become the ultimate waiting in line activity! Can anyone smell a game show at the next Frucon? Alex Trebek, where are you? Try these on for size. They may be impossible. I haven't tried to work them out yet. Or for more fun at home or on the road, suggest your own! Van Halen Billy Joel Nine Inch Nails Tears For Fears Any rule questions should be asked to the judge (me). If you don't like the rules, change them. But no prizes will be awarded unless you use my rules. Of course no prizes will be awarded either way, so don't worry too much about it. No crew, no other Frulad around.. he said "I think I've worn out my welcome" about 20 mins before I left.. man was he in a talkative mood tonight!) I met another zillion people tonight, on top of the many I already knew. Hi to you all I'm not going to even bother trying. But honestly it's sooo cool to have like 60 (and if I'm exaggerating it's not by much I swear) Fruheads at a concert. We were getting odd looks from the "normal" Torontonians around us, it was fun. But you know someday Fruvous is going to have to say something about the Fruheads during a concert to reassure "normal" people that we don't bite. Ok so where did it start? Around 5 20 I arrived at the Alexandra where I met Andy (starfox), Amy and Bill (wildbill). Amid observations about TTC tokens, discussion about the Canadian dollar and other such tidbits we made our way via TTC all the way up to North York Centre. A few people were already there, including Josh, Kimberly and Kris, who were all sitting near each other so that is where we parked ourselves.. or our stuff anyway before we "tag-teamed" in search of food. When we got back there were more Fruheads, more introductions, several group pictures (which did not include one with my camera so someone I want a copy of one) and general chat. It was advertised that Drea had not been able to pull off a miracle and would miss the show. We missed ya Drea! The show itself. Well we were all standing talking at the front of the stage even prior to the show, so "up and dancing" applied to me and a few others just as the "hero music" kicked in. This was not as high-energy as the Harbourfront show, but there were more firsts for me yet again so I'm not complaining. No setlist as usual, but highlights. Firsts: Spidey, Mistra Know It All, something or other about Pork Tenderloin that wasn't finished and they weren't planning to do, Present Tense Tureen and something else.. I've heard complaints about "I Will Hold You", but after hearing it twice I can honestly say that with a good video and a strong marketing campaign that could be a MAJOR hit. I really want a copy of the extended version of Sahara. Just that song.. It blows me away. It may have a lot to do with the fact that I don't need to worry about hearing most of the intro, it's all percussion, I can feel it! No nuances lost, guaranteed. It's the only song I can just close my eyes and immerse myself in, which makes it perfect as a show-starter. Mike was really on tonight. Among other things, I got to see Spidey live for the first time! He did keep having problems with instruments though, and even worked it into one of the songs, a line about how the guitar worked only for Dave. In retrospect.. that's true, it wouldn't work for Jian either. There was this whole long pre-Pisco Bandito bit where he was trying to figure out what was wrong with it. Eventually everyone else ran out of banter and Murray decided to just ask how things were progressing, thus putting Jian on the spot. Many people were put on the spot. There was a spotlight on Murray for the poem in Marion Fruvous. Jian put Mike and Dave on the spot when, after some banter about how they were both wearing purple shirt songs: Jian:"Is there a Purple Shirt song?" Mike:"No." Jian:"I think I'd like to hear one." To their credit they managed to come up with something pretty quickly. Jian did this great riff on the fact that Shania Twain was playing elsewhere in Toronto tonight, a whole long "You're Still The One I Love" parody thanking us for coming. Also something I'd like a copy of. Few Mel Lastman jokes, Jian said his parents asked him not to do too many because some people in Toronto like our Mayor. (The presence of Mr and Mrs Ghomeshi did not keep their son from implying that Marion Fruvous was involved in S&M) I thought Mike's "Thank you, CIty of North York" right after the 2nd encore was great. Hung around after the show and talked for hours, again mostly not to the guys, although I think they're starting to recognize Silent Girl. I got three "Hi, who are you and what's on your mind?" looks. I do have something to ask but I'll throw it out to you guys in a separate post first. That was about it. I'm sure someone else will have the stuff I forgot.
