Sorry if I'm being thick -- I know someone will : straighten me out -- er, um, I mean, provide me with correct information! : ;) Thanks! The song about Rush is "The Greatest Man in America" and it is on the 'b' album. As for what Laika means, I'm not sure. The dictionary defines it as: "A dog belonging to a group of Asiatic breeds of the spitz type, characterized by a pointed muzzle, pricked ears, a stocky body with a thick, rough, grey, fawn, white, or black coat and a tail curled over the back." Just from that, it's tough to see the connection but further research uncovered that Laika is also the name of a dog the Soviets sent into space, so I think that's where the cosmic references come from. - - jordan - -- It's so simple to be wise. I haven't gone up to BC in a little while and I'd bet it's stricter now, but last time, my mother and I were waved right through customs after I replied "no" to "Do you have anything to declare?" This wouldn't be notable if I hadn't forgotten to take the bag from the Virgin Records Megastore off my lap. It was rather large, very red, and a little hard to miss. ;) Considering it was past 2 am, I guess we were all a litle sleepy.... - - jenn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Aug 1998 14:57:47 -0400 From: Jonathan 8 Ross Subject: Re: Hi Fellow Fruheads! Hi people, first time post here. I'm a fan of MF, I wouldn't make myself out to be a complete Fruhead, but perhaps with time.... :). anyway, I thought I'd offer a little insight: the name of the "SONO Eddie Vedder Guy" is BJ. I know this because I met him about an hour before the show, since he was there with a guy I knew. His girfriend also apparently made out with my younger brother at a party once, but this has never been proven to me (i.e. my brother never said anything about it) <----- irrelevant ramblings. the point is, this guy's name is BJ, so if you see him around now you'll know. anyway, i don't think I'll be up at any fruvous shows in cananda anytime soon, but perhaps I'll catch you all on the new york swing next fall. take care, jon , .:/ ,,///;, ,;/ o:::::::;;/// >::::::::;;\\\ ''\\\\\'" ';\ ';\ ------------------------------ Date: 6 Aug 1998 05:25:10 GMT From: ourhamster@aol.com (OurHamster) Subject: Re: Laika >: You know, I had no idea they left that poor dog in space until it starved >-- >: which of course makes the lyrics "you should have seen the look on that >dog's >: face" (I'm close enough, yes?) even more heart-rending. > >Give all the other junk we have up there, I wonder if that little >space capsule is still up there or has already undergone re-entry. Let's clear up some misinformation here. Laika did NOT die of starvation. It was put to sleep before the oxygen ran out. The shuttle then re-entered and burnt some time that year. Also, there is a memorial to Laika at the place where it was trained (Laika was a stray found by the Russian scientists). Laika was nicknamed "Muttnik" by the American media. The Russian Dogs that went into space (and the Russian translations): Laika (Barker in Russian) Bars (Panther or Lynx) Lisichka ( Little Fox) Belka (Squirrel) Strelka (Little Arrow) Pchelka (Little Bee) Mushka (Little Fly) Damka (Little Lady) Krasavka (Beauty) Chernushka (Blackie) Zvezdochka (Little Star). Verterok or Veterok (Little Wind) Ugolyok or Ugolek (Little Piece of Coal) *Five of the dogs died in flight: Laika, Bars, Lisichka, Pchelka, and Mushka. - -Laika was put to sleep before the O2 ran out. - -Bars and Lisichka died when the booster exploded during launch. - -Pchelka and Mushka died because the retrofire burn was not performed with the correct orientation and the capsule reentered the atmosphere at too steep an angle and was thus destroyed. The Russians had a set of stamps for the dogs that ventured into space. Enough useless trivia outta me! - --Novac "It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is.
