Ooohhh, noooo! Don't do that!! Just ask Chris T. to tell you her "going to see a band" border story sometime!! Buffalonians who've recently been crossing the border for Fruvian purpoises have recommended "I'm going to visit a friend in Toronto." I'm fairly sure the Customs agent at the Toronto airport was kidding, but s/he wanted to know why I was visiting at Christmas without bringing gifts. when i said i'd buy them in toronto, it was OK. My favorite album is "Wood", and I I'll be there - yeah for Fruvous playing in my hometown (even if I do have to travel two and a half hours to get back to my hometown - the joys of university life!). Last time I saw Fruvous at Mel Lastman Square, it was New Years Eve and I could barely walk back to the car, my feet were so frozen - I have great admiration for them playing guitars, etc on stage - I have no clue how musicians do that! :) I'll be the one with the funky nailpolish (I'm thinking either purple or smurfy blue depending on my mood when I do my nails!) with at least one (and hopefully) two new converts in tow! :) Sara _______ The secret of life: breathe in, breathe out, repeat. ------------------------------ Date: 6 Aug 1998 05:25:10 GMT From: ourhamster@aol.com (OurHamster) Subject: Re: Laika >: You know, I had no idea they left that poor dog in space until it starved >-- >: which of course makes the lyrics "you should have seen the look on that >dog's >: face" (I'm close enough, yes?) even more heart-rending. > >Give all the other junk we have up there, I wonder if that little >space capsule is still up there or has already undergone re-entry. Let's clear up some misinformation here. Laika did NOT die of starvation. It was put to sleep before the oxygen ran out. The shuttle then re-entered and burnt some time that year. Also, there is a memorial to Laika at the place where it was trained (Laika was a stray found by the Russian scientists). Laika was nicknamed "Muttnik" by the American media. The Russian Dogs that went into space (and the Russian translations): Laika (Barker in Russian) Bars (Panther or Lynx) Lisichka ( Little Fox) Belka (Squirrel) Strelka (Little Arrow) Pchelka (Little Bee) Mushka (Little Fly) Damka (Little Lady) Krasavka (Beauty) Chernushka (Blackie) Zvezdochka (Little Star). Verterok or Veterok (Little Wind) Ugolyok or Ugolek (Little Piece of Coal) *Five of the dogs died in flight: Laika, Bars, Lisichka, Pchelka, and Mushka. - -Laika was put to sleep before the O2 ran out. - -Bars and Lisichka died when the booster exploded during launch. - -Pchelka and Mushka died because the retrofire burn was not performed with the correct orientation and the capsule reentered the atmosphere at too steep an angle and was thus destroyed. The Russians had a set of stamps for the dogs that ventured into space. Enough useless trivia outta me! - --Novac "It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. I personally have been lurking and following this thread, and frankly, I've been getting quite a laugh out of it. I think that Jian is a bit of an enigma and he likes it that way...works very hard to come across as such. I admire that...I wish I could do that. However, I'm too much an open book, but that's another story. Jian, keep everyone guessing, man. :) Oh, and Melissa...whether Jian is gay or not, I think he still eats dinner.
