Unfortunately, my compatriots were silly (I'd use a stronger word here, but I'm feeling patriotic) and, as the song says, "left her there": they put her in a satellite and left her there, saying it was too expensive (among other things) to go retrieve it. This was in the late 50s (or was it 1960? I know it was before Yuri Gagarin - the first man in space - went into space in 1961). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vika [VEE-kah] Zafrin Patron Saint of Caffeine dacilen at bu dot edu aka Coffee Fru "You and your hula dance of culinary delight..." -ceecee ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Aug 1998 20:48:24 GMT From: hakmusic@juno.com Subject: Re: Jian's Cool! >> I've seen people wonder at Dan Bern and Laura Love's sexual preference too. Perhaps we're just curious about people whose outwardly visible self confidence in their own sexuality is more obvious than their sexual preference. It's certainly more interesting than the labels we throw around so casually. << It seems that the question of the artsts preference has come up on every list that I am on: Fruvous, Dan Bern, Dar Williams, and Indigo Girls. Well all but one, which is Patty Griffin - and there the question came up as to whether she was very close to the gay community or homophobic because she uses the words queer and faggot in two of her songs. I wonder if it is something about music lists in general or about the artists I listen too. It seems very odd to me that it comes up so often. Anyway, count me in with the "who cares/please don't ask" people. - - Harry - -----== Posted via Deja News, The Leader in Internet Discussion ==----- http://www.dejanews.com/rg_mkgrp.xp Create Your Own Free Member Forum ------------------------------ Date: 5 Aug 1998 21:07:59 GMT From: jenncyn@aol.com (JennCyn) Subject: Re: Canadian Customs > << just a curiosity thing... how many people have actually been asked for > proof of ID when crossing the border in and out of Canada? I haven't gone up to BC in a little while and I'd bet it's stricter now, but last time, my mother and I were waved right through customs after I replied "no" to "Do you have anything to declare?" This wouldn't be notable if I hadn't forgotten to take the bag from the Virgin Records Megastore off my lap. It was rather large, very red, and a little hard to miss. ;) Considering it was past 2 am, I guess we were all a litle sleepy.... - - jenn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Aug 1998 21:53:44 GMT From: BBWMinors@aol.com Subject: Laika You know, I had no idea they left that poor dog in space until it starved -- which of course makes the lyrics "you should have seen the look on that dog's face" (I'm close enough, yes?) even more heart-rending. Funny, I was named for a woman named Laika, so I guess I've been immortalized twice now by Moxy, ha ha ha (with the name Lisa, I'm sure you can all guess how my husband now refers to me around the house). So ... here's my current question -- my sister suggested it was too bad I'd already named my own dog (Cazzie), because Moxy would be a great name for a dog (especially for mine who is truly full of it). Who out there has a pet with an MF-related name? Or, for that matter, license plate (my current one is RUBRSOL but said car has 150,000 miles and most vans here in Maryland have plates starting with M, so thought when I give in and go soccer-mom (or in my case drummer-girl mom) with the Honda Odyssey, MXYFRVS would be cool. Give all the other junk we have up there, I wonder if that little space capsule is still up there or has already undergone re-entry. That'd be pretty gruesome if it still is. Well, not much as in radically changed, but just has a different feel to it. It is a really good opener to me and when you see it live, the transitions in styles are much more pronounced. Oh, and the bass part is really cool and fun to play around on.... I think they've done Lounge-Laika before too, but I'm not certain. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Aug 1998 17:35:50 -0500 From: Chad Maloney Subject: Re: Not a kilt!
