Tony Trischka is *the* banjo master, including in the old sense of the word. Personally, I like Alison Brown better, but I think that has more to do with her tune writing - I don't actually think her technical banjo playing skill is any better than Tony Trischka. If you're a fan of the banjo, Tony Trishcka's album "World Turning" is a definite must-buy. Trischka has researched the history of the banjo, and in addition to developing his own innovative style, he has also mastered every historical banjo playing style known to us. This album is a survey of banjo styles, including his. I had the pleasure of seeing him on his "World Turning" tour, and it wasn't just a concert, it was also a lesson in banjo, with history and culture and different kinds of banjos and so on. If you're a fan of the banjo, you may know that Bela Fleck was once Tony Trischka's student. Trischka is still better, IMO :) The last time I saw him, at the Iron Horse, was the same night as a Bela Fleck & The Flecktones show in my own town, but chose to drive 100 minutes to see him and skipped them. I sometimes jokingly speak of a "banjo trinity" :-) The Father - Tony Trischka The Son - Bela Fleck The Holy Ghost - Alison Brown -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- The Left Bank Operation -- lbo@leftbank.com http://www.leftbank.com/ "cos, is perl God?" It's my parents place and they don't much care for overnight guests. I am wondering, however, what kind of turnout of Fruheads there will be on the 7th/9th. I strongly suspect that I will be heading downtown alone at least to the show on the 7th. I have no friends who are real fans of the band (their appreciation ended with Bargainville). This results in 3 possible situations: 1) A friend comes with me but not because they enjoy the band, but because they have known me for years. Though it is flattering, it leaves me feeling a bit uncomfortable, guilty, actually, because I know they are not having as much fun as I am. (Though why I should feel responsible for their happiness when they volunteered to come is beyond me...) 2) I go alone. It's a guilt-free time, but still a solitary trip. 3) I don't go. And that just sucks. So. Who is going? Irene ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An optimist goes to the window each morning and says, "Good Morning God!"
