[Ben Cordes Subject: Re: branching out in musical tastes... first of all, thanks very much to all who took the time to respond to my plea for fru-like music. i've been in new england for the past week checking out colleges (if i hear another "info session", i think i'll scream) and fighting the fear that in six months, i'll have to make the first in a series of life-changing decisions in the college selection process... so i've not been able to respond till now. i'm silently cursing the ironies surrounding the trip, as well. i've not been able to find any Jim's Big Ego cds around here, and now finding out that i was within miles of his hometown (and no doubt, local cd carriers)... grr. oh, well. i'll check out his website & see about ordering info & whatnot. as far as my other musical tastes... hmm. i have a variety, but mostly within that nebulous "alternative" blanket. i get really "into" music sometimes, and become so focused that i limit myself unconsciously (read: 5-year love of tmbg, nearly to exclusion of all else ;p) from experiencing other genres. i have no jazz, and my experience with celtic is basically loreena mckennit and what i've heard at the Ohio Renaissance Festival (which, fortunately, is only a half-hour away from my home...), but i've thoroughly enjoyed what i've heard. while i'm not, again, an acapella "fan", i have a cd or two, and would like to get my hands on Sean Altman's new cd, having heard rave reviews of it from various sources. typically, what enamors me to a genre/musical group is a) singable lyrics, if there are lyrics (i adore singing along... and if i can't understand what the lead singer is screaming/mumbling/whining, what's the point?), b) an honest-to-goodness melody, especially with strong harmonies to support it (one of the main reasons i adore fruvous), c) interesting and/or unusual instrumentation (accordion, organ, pan pipe... whatever. very few guitar-and-bass bands catch my attention), and d) a range within the album itself (read: all songs aren't alike). outside of that, i'm open to anything. and perhaps a little desperate, since i'm beginning to feel that i've led a sheltered musical life thus far, although it's improving all the time. i'm also a (sigh) radio addict, in that i usually have it on in the background when on the computer, or doing less taxing homework, on the phone, etc... keeps me up on current musical trends, and i fortunately have a local station that plays mostly music i enjoy. there's really only been one song where i consistantly turn the radio *off*: "standing outside a broken phone booth..." by primitive radio gods. cannot *stand* that sample they use about getting downhearted... well, that's probably more than anyone ever needs to know about my musical tastes, but if you've come this far, please, give suggestions. my musical horizons need broadening. :) going to go nap now (down to 204 msgs in my inbox from 290... you prolific a.m.m-f folk, you), ^kat^ "unconnected and free no relationship to anything" ------------------------------ Date: 18 Jul 1998 22:29:53 GMT From: bodaceah@aol.com (Bodaceah) Subject: Re: getting hit on via moxy shirt! I guess I know a lot of stupid people. As for knowing stupid people, not necessarily, gay men can read too so that doesn't make the people you know stupid, just gay. Although it can be frustrating not attracting those you wish to attract, try not to be frustrated, the fact that someone is finding you attractive should be flattering. Better than the alternative. Easy fix for that -- just get a "Your new girlfriend" T-shirt instead. -Mike Pelletier. - -- - -- "[It will] be very hard to increase browser share on the merits of [Internet Explorer] alone. I'm planning on going to the show at Faneuil Hall in Boston at the end of this month, and I've been thinking about trying to tape it. Does anyone have any advice as to a) asking permission, b) what equipment to use, c) soundboard vs. audience (remember, this is an outside concert), or d) anything else that might be relevant? - - ben - -- Ben Cordes bcordes@quadri.hlo.dec.com Hardware Design Engineer, Compaq Computer Corporation ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V1 #122 ********************************************
