I was in the back of a black car with grey leather seats (yes, this detail sticks out for some reason.) I was freezing cold. Jian pops in, and gives me his sweater. I'd never seen this sweater before, mind you. It was grey, mock-turtlenecked and wide-ribbed, and made of a soft chenielle-like stuff. the creepy part was...he was wearing it at NoHo. some 2 or 3 months after the dream. i'm not saying it means anything, just that it's wierd. :) that was it for the dream. Ji disappeared after that. maybe i woke up, who knows. latah. - -sheryljean "The force runs weakly in your family. You dont have it... your father dosen't have it... Some of them do that, yes. But it is a pretty unfair generalization to say that chains in general do that. McDonalds, for example, is (now at least) competing almost exclusively with Burger King and Wendy's. I doubt they have put a local hamburger stand out of business in over 2 decades. These days a local hamburger joint lives or dies on its own merits and local tastes, since I don't think anyone actually considers McDonalds to be competition to a unique hamburger restaurant. They are different animals all together. In addition, while McDonalds MAY have used unfair trade practices at one time or another, I am not aware of any such incidents. True McDonalds workers are not the best paid, and many are only part time, but this is the standard situation in all hamburger places. It isn't like McDonalds is busting Fry Cooks local 192 or something. It is an entry level job and everyone understands that. (Not to mention that McDonalds, from what I understand, is overjoyed to find someone who actually wants to get on a career track them. They offer extensive free training and good benefits to such individuals.) Another example is Target. While Wal-Mart clearly practices predatory business techniques, I don't think Target is nearly so evil. True they must draw some business away from local merchants, but that pretty much amounts to people voting with their feet and pocketbooks. (I don't buy jeans at Joe's local clothing store when I can get them 1/3 cheaper at Target. That would be silly.) But what Target does to mitigate the impact of their presence on a community is to purposefully put some of their profits back into the community. I don't know if Wal-Mart does that, but since I've never heard about it, I doubt it. My point here is basically that the situation is far more complex than just to say local store good big chain bad. You need to look at each individual instance before you can make a valid evaluation. Ok, everyone times up. Remember there will be a quiz next tuesday.
