Hopefully it should clear up Miriam-Beetle's questions ... From: Ofer Inbar Subject: Re: jims albums To: nields-nook@pobox.com Date: Thu, 2 Jul 1998 14:38:46 -0400 (EDT) Jim's been my favorite songwriter for years, so I'll take a stab at this question :-) There are four Jim Infantino albums available, all of them on CD, some on Gadly and some on Tangible music, but all of them reasonably available. The first two, Strawman and World of Particulars, are from before Jim had a band. They're both under his name, Jim Infantino, and are all solo acoustic work. They have a lot of his older songs which he doesn't seem to ever do anymore, but some of them are really great songs. I especially love Shoebox Bird and Big Old Dark Green Car. World of Particulars also has a live version of Stress which is really good. It's my second favorite Jim album, and I highly recommend it. Then Jim got a band and called it Jim's Big Ego. It was a fun band, and a loud band. It was a rock band. They recorded an album called More Songs About Me, under the name Jim's Big Ego. It's a lot more of a rock album than a folk album, but still has Jim's excellent writing. It's the loudest Jim album, and has some of the most biting classics, such as Bite Me (Hard). But shortly after (or maybe even before) that album was released, the band broke up. Jim put together a second band, also called it Jim's Big Ego. This band, consisting of Hillary Kuegler and John Kiehne, were actually already a band to themselves under the name Smokstik, and are also a couple. Hillary plays drums (really well!!) and John plays the Chapman Stick, one of my favorite instruments. This version of Jim's Big Ego was somewhat folkier, and Jim started doing some solo acoustic stuff at his shows again, although he continued the trend of writing weird music to deliver his poems by :) I think it was during this second incarnation of Jim's Big Ego that he came up with the term "acid folk" to describe his music. The second Jim's Big Ego recorded a live album in two nights at Club Passim in June of 1996. They did two shows each night, for a total of four shows. That is what became titanic. I went to the second show the first night, and both shows the second night, and it turns out that no material from the first show of the first night was used for the album. Those shows were *excellent*, and the album that resulted really did a great job of capturing them. titanic is definitely my favorite Jim album. You'll notice, BTW, that it says *both* "Jim Infantino" and "Jim's Big Ego" on the cover & spine. I think that's a really nice touch. The album includes the full band on some songs, and just jim on others, including a few poems delivered without music. But less than a year after titanic came out, the second Jim's Big Ego came to an end. Basically, John & Hillary decided to concentrate on Smokstik, though it was actually staggered and for a while Hillary was still playing drums and a new guy was playing bass to replace John's stick. So now we have the third Jim's Big Ego, and there's no album of them yet. There is one in the works, though, which I think will be out later this year. Jim's certainly got enough new songs to more than fill an album. However, one of the guys in the band, Kurt, is also in another band that is doing pretty well. It may very well be that Jim's curse will continue, and there will be another change in the Big Ego when the new album comes out. I don't know if this means I should hope for the new album soon, or hope that it is much delayed... I think all Jim fans should start with titanic. Then, if you're a Nields fan, my recommendation is to get The World of Particulars next. The get the other two, and the new album :-) -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- WBRS@brandeis.edu http://www.wbrs.org/ "...everybody's trying not to be just like everybody, and I don't want to be like that!" -- Jim Infantino, "The Someday Cafe" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Jul 98 23:19:15 GMT From: chad@radix.net (Chad Schrock) Subject: Re: Fruvous Question... The guy guarding the entry to the members area, though, suggested that I go to the membership booth and plead my case. A very nice woman at the booth said since we don't even live in the listening area, we ought to be able to get a stamp. So we got our stamps, got in line, and my kids got to meet the band. js In article , DrX wrote: > To make my review brief, as i've got a few things to take care of... > > Doors opened at 1pm...fruvous went on at 6:30. Woo-hoo! So, what are my chances of obtaining this live album anywhere near Indiana? Or would it be better to finagle someone out there to snag me that album?
