Really what you describe as a mailing list is what the ng here does. Maybe there is a lot of spam, I don't know. My news service (newsguy, ex-zippo) has a spam filter. I usually only see one of two spams a week from the ng. Not bad at all. And Moz' make money fast spoof made it by the filter. FDC is the "official" place for set lists, announcements and such. Since it is so well kept up, we don't really need a real time replacement for it. Fruvous Fans have what most of those internet savvy band fan dream of. A fan who is willing to put lotsa time into upkeeping a website and a band that is willing to give information to keep that site up to date. Now, before the last couple weeks, I would have said a mailing list would be good for people whose newsfeed stinks. But now that Ofer and Co. have gotten the mail<-->news gateway going, that isn't a problem anymore. If reading the ng through a newsreader is bad, just subscribe to the gateway and it'll look exactly like a mailing list. And you get archives for free from Deja News *grin*. To me, the ng is for talking and discussing in a bulletin board style setting. IRC is for talking and discussion in a real time setting. FDC is for official information dissemination. Yes, set lists and reviews get posted to the ng and sometimes even get typed out into the channel on IRC, but eventually they end up in the care Chris O'Malley for posterity. Finally, an example of how too many forums can be bad. They Might Be Giants has a mailing list, a WWW-Board, a newsgroup, IRC channel, and a website. I myself follow only the mailing list. The newsgroup has degraded so much that it is hard to even filter useful information from it. Good information happens on the www-board, but never gets to the mailing list (or it takes a couple weeks). The web page is decent, but a far cry from FDC. Information can be in one of the forums, and can take weeks to filter to any of the other forums. I think the newsgroup reported on the TMBG split from Elektra first, but it took a couple days for someone on the mailing list to browse the newsgroup and repost it on the mailing list, since so many people only do one or the other. I think Fruvous fans have it great. We have a great newsgroup that is active and a good forum of discussion for a wide-variety of topis. We have a great IRC channel, #MoxyFruvous, on the undernet (*plug plug* in Hugo's absense), and one of the best information web sites for any band I know of in http://www.fruvous.com. I'd be more than happy to participate in a mailing list, but I don't see it filling a need that the online fruvous community has. We'd just be expanding... Durn, I'm long winded. But those are my thoughts. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 12:23:55 GMT From: dacilen@bu.edu (Vika Zafrin) Subject: Re: Nu Fruhead Hey Jamal! Welcome to ammf, you no-longer-lurker, you. :) So did you make it to the NYC show? I didn't - though, in theory, I could, it would have been very bad for me, financially and mentally (my brain is on overdrive, cuz I've been doing too much lately that didn't involve rest). Sooo, didja make it? Details, I want details! "Hi" to anyone reading this who >saw me or with whom I spoke; I was wearing a TMBG t-shirt and was in the center front. Okay, so here's the deal. I went to this concert (my first Frushow ever) by myself. My friend Lawrence from Fairfax (Hi Lawrence) showed up in the middle of EFO's set (some of you may know him from the TMBG list). Anyway, I saw a bunch of people that i figured were on the newsgroup, but was way too shy to talk to them. Remind me not to do this. Since The Boys didn't play the Drinking Song or Fly :( I am probably going to both the shows in this area in the end of July (at The Ram's Head and The Birchmere). So if you're planning on going to those shows, keep an eye out for a big blue-eyed girl wearing glasses and clothes that are some shade of blue. And I'll keep my eye out for you, too. Okay? > >I taped the concert and it came out very well, B+ or A- I'd say. If you don't have any boots, >that's ok, we could work out something else. > I must say--the sound was awesome. Maybe it's because it was an outdoor concert, so the sound didn't have anything to bounce off of except the people (and the humid air;). Even though they had to shut *all* the electrics down just before 7pm because of the lightning, they got everything running perfectly. Props to Columbia for having more intelligent sound people than the 9:30 club (although, it's not that hard). Oh, and I must say that going to this concert was probably not healthy for my Moxy Fruvous obsession. If you hear rumors about the boys (esp. Jian and Murray) getting strange e-mails from a weird little girl, it's probably me. =) *@* *@* *@* sarah with an h "When I get back we'll dip our cup sarahnade at mindspring dot com into the fountain of youth. http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/~robeson We'll rest our heads and raise a toast ICQ #10811377 nick:sarahnade to the sunset's beautiful truth." -Moxy Fruvous ------------------------------ End of alt.music.moxy-fruvous digest V1 #45 *******************************************
