I don't think I ever really had an Alloy nickname - I'm just Beth, formerly in Atlanta but now one of the Colorado contingent. I'm a member at FES by the name of ColoradoBeth, but don't think to log in much (is there an RSS feed, by chance?) I don't remember exactly when I joined, but I was one of the early ones - I remember going through a tough time in 1995-1996 and spending a lot of hours reading my Alloy e-mail. I was in grad school when I joined; I'm now a senior human factors type trying to make life easier for the good folks who work in hospitals (laboratory staff at the moment). Some of my colleagues like to tease me by calling me "DOCTOR Beth Meyer", I think precisely because I try not to make a big deal of the degree and am now a little embarassed by my IM and Twitter handle (DrBethMeyer). Somewhere there is a physician named Beth Meyer who hates my guts for being an early adopter. Alloyites I've met: The Colorado bunch (Keith, Erik, JaMac & Teresa), Brian Clayton, Robin in Boston, /\/\iles, Mary Brown, and Melissa. I still live for the day I could meet Crackers... When I was about to graduate and interviewing for jobs, I got to do the Alloy U.S. tour :-) Favorite Alloy moment: Probably having the Colorado Alloyites over to my house, along with /\/\iles, and recording music. I think my daughter was just a preschooler at the time, and my son a baby. She's now getting ready to start middle school in the fall and the son is a 3rd-grader who invents stuff and has flown a small plane (with help) a couple of times now. Also the Colorado contingent hanging out with Thomas after the Boulder show a couple of years ago. Also the Alloy baby showers (thanks, guys!) Hanging out in a hotel bar with Melissa and swapping stories until well after they closed would also rank up there. Also the song parody contest. Dang, we've had a really good run! - -Beth - -----Original Message----- From: owner-alloy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-alloy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Keith Stansell Sent: Saturday, May 15, 2010 11:54 PM To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: Re: Alloy: Important Announcement: Alloy to Close Down I think it would be great if everyone could sum up: When did you first join Alloy, Why did you join? What Alloy nick-names did you use? What were you doing then, What are you doing now, and how has your life changed? Favorite Alloy moment(s) Other Alloy members you've met in person? Here goes mine: I joined in 1996 (i think) and was the 100'th member to join (still waiting for those steak knives :) I joined because I was looking for more information about the soing "Flight of the Fairchild" that was on an import cassette version of The Golden Age of Wireless. I usually went by "Keith (the sole inhabitant) Stansell" but when I moved to Denver in 1997, I was in company of a couple of Alloy members and changed it to "Keith (no longer the sole inhabitant) Stansell. When I first Joined Alloy, I was a corrosion engineer for a pipeline company based in Salt Lake City Utah. Now I'm a software engineer for Examiner.com in Denver Colorado. Still single, but now own a home instead of rent. Favorite Alloy moments: The excitement I got when Thomas Dolby responded to a message I posted to Alloy. - wow, Making friends with the Colorado Alloy Contingent : Beth Meyers, Eric Habbinga, JaMac (Dennis Alexander) and wife Theresa (who's wedding I attended). Contributing to and burning all those CDs for The Flattery Earth and The Bride of Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake. Calling Thomas over and having him sit with us briefly on the patio at the Alloy table at the Anaheim HOB before his show there. Having been an influence on the naming of Thomas' comeback tour - with Elaine suggesting the tour not be called the "Sick Individual Tour" but the "Sole Inhabitant Tour" based on my Flickr account name where I posted pictures of those early shows before the tour, It gave me a special thrill seeing a CD, DVD and concert poster with that name on it. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sole_i/sets/72057594109574689/ Other Alloy members I've met in person: Dennis Alexander, Beth Meyer, Eric Habbinga and Theresa Alexander here in Colorado as well as /\/\iles and Brian Clayton when they visited the state. In California at Thomas' comeback shows: Mellisa, Russel, Monya De, Trent, Michelle, Ben B., Keith, Greg, Brian Clayton, John McJunkin, Warren and Thomas Dolby himself. I got to again meet /\/\iles and Mary Brown and stayed with them in California for the San Francisco Sole Inhabitant show (little did I know Thomas would later play 3 times in the Denver area that year) I also had the pleasure of meeting Melissa again in Washington DC and getting a nice tour of the city on a short visit I had there. While visiting the Toronto based company I worked for at the time, I got to meet the one and only Crackers (Chris Cracknell) in Hamilton where we were congratulated by other bar patrons for having such a diverse and interesting conversation that went on for hours. On a later visit, Crackers and I went and toured Niagara Falls which was a lot of fun. So Alloy, I'll miss you. I've never known such a great group of people. Every time I met someone from the list in person, it was like meeting an old friend. Thanks everyone for all the years. Be sure to friend me on facebook if you haven't already : http://www.facebook.com/keith.stansell ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 May 2010 22:44:49 -0400 From: Merujo Subject: Re: Alloy: Important Announcement: Alloy to Close Down So very cool to see folks popping up to check in.
