I too am saddened by the passing of Alloy, but also understand that it's
fulfilled it's role. I am a member of the FES site, but have not been an
active participant there, I need to try to be more invol.

Melissa, congratulations to you and Jon in joining Lunesse as co-moderators
of the FES. That should not go unrecognized.

I think it would be nice if all the remaining members of Alloy could give a
roll call hello and let us know about yourselves and what you are up to.
For years, that was what most of us did, exchange personal tales and
interest. I guess we were early pioneers in the whole "social networking"
thing.

I think it would be great if everyone could sum up:

When did you first join Alloy,
Why did you join?
What Alloy nick-names did you use?
What were you doing then,
What are you doing now, and how has your life changed?
Favorite Alloy moment(s)
Other Alloy members you've met in person?

Here goes mine:

I joined in 1996 (i think) and was the 100'th member to join (still waiting
for those steak knives :)

I joined because I was looking for more information about the soing "Flight
of the Fairchild" that was on an import cassette version of The Golden Age
of Wireless.

I usually went by "Keith (the sole inhabitant) Stansell" but when I moved to
Denver in 1997, I was in company of a couple of Alloy members and changed it
to "Keith (no longer the sole inhabitant) Stansell.

When I first Joined Alloy, I was a corrosion engineer for a pipeline company
based in Salt Lake City Utah. Now I'm a software engineer for Examiner.com
in Denver Colorado. Still single, but now own a home instead of rent.

Favorite Alloy moments:
The excitement I got when Thomas Dolby responded to a message I posted to
Alloy. - wow,
Making friends with the Colorado Alloy Contingent : Beth Meyers, Eric
Habbinga, JaMac (Dennis Alexander) and wife Theresa (who's wedding I
attended).
Contributing to and burning all those CDs for The Flattery Earth and The
Bride of Aliens Ate My Birthday Cake.
Calling Thomas over and having him sit with us briefly on the patio at the
Alloy table at the Anaheim HOB before his show there.
Having been an influence on the naming of Thomas' comeback tour - with
Elaine suggesting the tour not be called the "Sick Individual Tour" but the
"Sole Inhabitant Tour" based on my Flickr account name where I posted
pictures of those early shows before the tour, It gave me a special thrill
seeing a CD, DVD and concert poster with that name on it.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sole_i/sets/72057594109574689/

Other Alloy members I've met in person:
Dennis Alexander, Beth Meyer, Eric Habbinga and Theresa Alexander here in
Colorado as well as /\/\iles and Brian Clayton when they visited the state.

In California at Thomas' comeback shows: Mellisa, Russel, Monya De, Trent,
Michelle, Ben B., Keith, Greg, Brian Clayton, John McJunkin, Warren and
Thomas Dolby himself.

I got to again meet /\/\iles and Mary Brown and stayed with them in
California for the San Francisco Sole Inhabitant show (little did I know
Thomas would later play 3 times in the Denver area that year)

I also had the pleasure of meeting Melissa again in Washington DC and
getting a nice tour of the city on a short visit I had there.

While visiting the Toronto based company I worked for at the time, I got to
meet the one and only Crackers (Chris Cracknell) in Hamilton where we
were congratulated by other bar patrons for having such a diverse and
interesting conversation that went on for hours. On a later visit, Crackers
and I went and toured Niagara Falls which was a lot of fun.

So Alloy, I'll miss you. I've never known such a great group of people.
Every time I met someone from the list in person, it was like meeting an
old friend.

Thanks everyone for all the years.

We certainly do welcome you at the forum, the rest of Thomas' website
and at Thomas' Fan List. There is a lot of action over there, lots of
discussions and of course, FREEBIES.
As a member you can download not only the new "Love is a Loaded
Pistol" but also all the downloads from the liner notes in the albums
that were reissued last year.
And it's just the beginning.

The forum also has an online chat forum, so you can connect with each
other in a whole new way...and you never know who will show up in chat.

I have lurked here for a very long time without posting a single thing.

Melissa has done a great job keeping the list up to date with
information. When Thomas was making music 15+ years ago, there wasn't
a web the way there is today. Now we have webpages, social networks,
and so many more ways to connect with our musical favorites, and
others who appreciate their work. There are plenty of ways for you all
to not have a one-sided experience.

It's a pretty great time to have new material coming, and new ways to
access it, and each other's enthusiasm.
Change can be hard, but it often is for the good. We all certainly
hope so and think so in this case.

Come on over, the water is great!

So farewell Alloy - I think I had some intuition that it was going to end soon...

When I first encountered the group I was a callow student of 18 or 19 - now I'm a marketing director age 34 with a wife and 2 children. And less hair.

Re-signing up to Alloy was pretty much the first thing I did whenever changing email addresses (you had to do that alot back then), and so apart from a few weeks I've been a constant member...

Highlights for me are quite alot:
- - meeting Thomas twice - once in the office at O2 when he came in for something to do with Retro Ringtones - I just kind of sat there and said something dumb I think. Then again backstage at Wireless Festival with a similar lack of distinction
- - The two tribute albums - recording Flying North was awesome, and even though I was 'inexperienced' at the time I still love the result. Plus I love everyone else's contributions - Crackers, Eric Habbinga, and of course Lissu spring to mind...
- - Meeting up with some of the gang - I had an uproarious night out with Crackers and Croydon, more years ago than I now care to remember
- - Getting lyrics written on the old FES bulletin board so many years ago - I was stuck for a final verse for this complex rap number off my first album, and so I explained where I was with it and Croydon knocked out a verse that was inch-perfect a few days later
- - The Great Tape Exchange (remember tapes anyone) - for anyone not around then, I suggested that in order to share the music that we all love (beyond TMDR) we all compile a mix tape, run off loads of copies, and MAIL TAPES to each other! Really! Over the following weeks I received a number of packages from around the world, all with great and interesting stuff on them. I would never have known King Crimson if not for Steven Tillson's tape (still have it!)

So I'll be heading over to the FES, and hope to stay in touch...

Hi all,

Sad news re the end of Alloy but understandable, I joined the FES the other
day.

Although not a member from the start, it was one of the first things I did
when I finally got on line with the Internet in about 1999.Most of the time I
have been one of the lurkers which I suppose didn't help keep Alloy running,
however I have met some great people via the group and thank you all for that.

Since I joined I have had 2 kids seen Thomas live twice at Manchester (where I
managed to meet him before hand) and Union Chapel, didnt get to speak with him
there as I was in conversation with Bruce Woolley before running to catch a
bus. I was very honoured however to also meet Thomas at the 'Pirate Twins' gig
at Aldermaston where he congragulated me on my T-Shirt ' Front was the US 7"
Sleeve for Europa and the back The Cover for Low Noise Jungle Line.- this
exciting conversation was held in the Toilets - what a place for a chat.

Some people may remember me due to the name BLackpoolTangerine where I would
throw the odd line in about Blackpool Football Club - well I can end this with
the message that when I joined Alloy I was watching Blackpool in the bottom
Division in England, whilst next week I head to Wembley to possibly see them
into the Premiership alongside Chelsea, Liverpool and some club named
Manchester United.

Best wishes to you all and thanks for the sharing of Dolby.

Paul (Blackpool Tangerine).
Anyway best wishes to you all

When did you first join Alloy?

The first mail item I still have is from '97, but I'm pretty sure I was on
the
list from fairly soon after it was created because I remember seeing an
announcement from Paul Bailey (I think), the original list owner, in the old
FES tap Room, inviting
FES members to subscribe to Alloy.

Why did you join?

See above

What Alloy nick-names did you use?

I was Slarvibarglhee - an anagram of my real name and the name I still use
on the rare occasions that I log in to the forum at thomasdolby.com.

What were you doing then?

I was an IT system administrator/network manager/IT trainer for a government
department.

What are you doing now, and how has your life changed?

I'm a Risk and Performance Manager for the same department, although it's
changed its name many times since I joined Alloy. I am also now a grand
father and a grumpy old man, whereas I was originally a grumpy YOUNG man.

Favorite Alloy moment(s)

Meeting Lissu with her husband and mum when we went to see The Matrix.

Also, when The Emeritus Professor interactive story took offin the Tap Room,
with around a dozen of us regularly contributing to it, although that was a
FES thing rather than Alloy.

Finally, the alternate lyrics we wrote to some of TMDR's songs.

Other Alloy members you've met in person?

Only Lissu.

I'll miss Alloy, or what Alloy used to be. There was a time when I would
post to it several times every day, as did several others and as has been
said by someone else, it was a kind of precursore to the kind of social
networking we have now. But technology has overtaken us and I understand
why it's not really worth carrying on with Alloy

Be seeing you.

(Thug 2: 'Yeah.')
