As a follower of Thomas Dolby and his music, I am really really excited that Thomas is in deals with EMI to rerelease his first two albums with extra tracks. First, I am wondering why the track listing to "Flat Earth" is in order to its original release with added tracks on the end but "Wireless" tracks are all out of order with original tracks mixed about. I don't like this order. Some people might but I don't. I remember buying, not to change the subject, some time ago the deluxe edition of Tears for Fears "Songs from the Big Chair" and the order was the same as the original release with extras on the end. Ditto for The Fixx "Reach the Beach". I enjoyed relistening to them both, and still do, as I remember it when I was much younger in its original form. And that's how I remember it. The new tracks were a bonus and liked it better at the end. Now I'm sure someone will respond to my reply and quote many other rereleses by other artists that are in the original order with extras at the end. If Thomas decides to rerelease "Golden Age" and "Flat Earth" as posted on alloy, I would still buy it but may not enjoy it as much as if it was in it's original form. That's my opinion. I would like to how anyone else feels to this and would love to hear your reply.... You bring up a very good - and very heartfelt point - about the wonderful feel of the familiar on your ear - and how it resonates in your memory. In case you hadn't had a chance to read TMDR's blog entry re: the re-releases, here's a quote that might clarify his choice of track order: "Here's my proposed running order. I'm sure there will be some controversy, because people tend to think of the version they have as THE original version. The best solution I can think of is to include all versions in the sequence in which they first appeared." The track listing order isn't the familiar order for me, either. It messes with your brain's expectations a bit when you are used to hearing things one way or another! Another quote from that same paragraph of the blog entry: "But it's unavoidable that some folks will feel they're in the wrong place. What can you do? put them in you iPod and make your own running order." Ah, the joy of playlists. :) I guess no matter how it ends up, we can mix it all up to our heart's content. More thoughts, folks? When you hear it, you'll see why some things make sense - especially the placement of Wrec of the Fairchild before Airwaves. Wreck of the Fairchild ends with a short - wave sound that leads directly into Airwaves. It's a great introduction to what used to be the start of side 2 of the tape. Russel - I think I still owe you a scan of said tape from when I met you at Disneyland - or was it someone else. I'm just glad I can now post to Alloy again - real time. - -Keith No longer the sole inhabitant ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2008 00:01:47 EDT From: Bluemeitz@cs.com Subject: Alloy: Re: Dolby Reissues II Hi all again, Now here is my feedback to any future Dolby rereleases: 1. In addition to seeing "Golden Age" rereleased. I hope that it is remastered along with numerous bonus cuts on 2 cd's or maybe even 3 cd's. Along with all b-sides, rare edits, live cuts, if possible and maybe a 12-inch. (such as hard to find nuggets as: Therapy Growth, Wreck of Fairchild, Puppet theatre, etc..) So to say to this is the most definite "Golden Age" rerelease ever. 2. Ditto for "Flat Earth". And also for his other two albums "Aliens Ate My Buick" and "Astronauts and Heretics". I recently bought a sealed copy of "Astronauts" and this was rereleased but on a different label with no bonus cuts, no remastering, but in the original form with nothing new. (I was a bit disppointed even tho I have a new and sealed copy) 3. A dvd U.S. release of "Live Wireless", complete and uncut, along with bonus footage, if any exists, and bonus cuts. 4. This was mentioned some time ago on alloy but unsure of its status. A dvd U.S. release of Dolby's video collection, released in the early 90's on VHS, rereleased on dvd along with music clips missing from the original collection, such as " I Love You Goodbye", and any others along with any other bonus cuts. Remastered and in original running order. 5. This goes with #1. A "Golden Age" release with extensive liner notes, lyrics to all of the tracks, along with original release artwork, if possible. Original vinyl release of "Golden Age" shows Dolby standing on a stage. 6. Rerelease Dolby's first charted album here in the U.S. being the mini album "Blinded by Science" with extras and other versions if possible to expand this release. This would please many Dolby fans, including myself, to finally have all of those 12-inch cuts on one complete cd. This could be released seperately or tied in with the "Golden Age" release. 7. If any one of the above cannot be achieved on its own then I propose a Dolby box set to include any or all of the above along with possible extras, if any were still left. (such as those tracks that appeared on soundtracks like "Howard the Duck" ) 8. Not a reissue but would hope that all this talk of reissues will tie in to new studio release by Dolby. Something solid to bring him back into the limelight again. He has been away way too long from this. That concludes my input on Dolby. (for now) I hope that many alloy members and Thomas himself will read this for input. I would love to hear his response. I'm just kidding - I would LOVE to see all this - in particular the Blinded by Science EP - haven't seen that one in a while, and my cassette is ca-put. jm On Sep 14, 2008, at 9:01 PM, Bluemeitz@cs.com wrote: > > Hi all again, > > Now here is my feedback to any future Dolby rereleases: > > 1.
