I will go on record as either having no standards, or being easily entertained - I loved Clone Wars! And I look forward to the TV series of Clone Wars later this year. Excelsior! (or sumthin' like that), Warren Warren, I saw The Clone Wars with my seven-year-old last weekend, and one of the previews was for Igor - the new version of Science really rocks! Looks like an entertaining movie as well. jm **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. I don't know if I'll go see Clone Wars, but, a few years ago I sang the praises of Hackers and was beaten to a pulp by all the computer geeks here on Alloy. Beaten up by geeks? That's bad! Anyway, what they all hated, I just glossed over as I watched it and enjoyed it for what it was good at accomplishing. I ended up doing my workouts for more than a year to nothing but the soundtrack of that movie, which, aside from the movie, probably has a LOT more merit. ... but come on guys, Angelina Jolie was hot in that movie! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 11:43:01 -0400 From: Merujo Subject: Re: Alloy: Clone Wars On Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 9:47 AM, Dennis Alexander wrote: > I'll back you up on that. I'm afraid I don't recall the Hackers issue, Dennis. It may have been during my Alloy sabbatical. I'm very sorry you took some hits from folks in the group. That's not cool. I hope my query about Clone Wars wasn't seen as me beating up on anyone. I was just curious if it was as bad as the reviews I'd read. I'm an old school Star Wars freak. Saw the original 27 times in the theater that first summer of 1977. My sister and I made a papier mache & chicken wire Greedo head for me to wear for Halloween that year (it was REALLY hot inside that thing.) Even won a prize in a Lucasfilm art contest back in 1981 (you'll see me listed in the official fan club newsletter Bantha Tracks #14 as a winner in the 2-D art contest judged by Joe Johnston.) I get green-eyed envious when coworkers of mine from Geographic go out to Skywalker Ranch. Sadly for me, I was really disappointed in most of the second trilogy. I found some of it really embarrassing. Maybe I was losing my childhood sense of awe? Maybe I missed the real models blowing up and the sarcastic wit written into the first trilogy. I don't know. For me, the second set had too much CGI, too much unbelievably cheesy, painful romance ("I'm gonna mawwy you when I gwow up!" EEK!), and too many made-for-Kenner creatures. However, I thought the snippets I saw of Genndy Tartakovsky's animated Clone Wars were cool. I guess I don't understand why the Clone Wars had to be made *again*. I hate it when Uncle George rewrites and rewrites and rewrites. You know how there are glass half full people and glass half empty people? I'm a "Greedo Shot First" person. :) As always, your mileage may vary. These are just my opinions and my crankiness! "Oh, like the last three, you mean?" I agree (like most reasonable people of Planet Earth) that Episodes I, II, and III had every bit of "soul" wrung from them - barely watchable. The Clone Wars is entertaining, at least. Lucas goes WAAAY out of his way to capture the same feel of the old time Saturday matinee serials . . . it feels like the film opens in the middle of something, and that there's no tidy introduction - you're just kind of tossed into the action (just like they used to do with the old serials.) Otherwise, there's very little in the way of satisfying "answers to all the questions" that one might expect. Moreover, the baby Hutt business came across as a bit silly. The 14-year old female Padawan character is compelling, in the same way that the Avatar series on television is compelling (and I freely admit that I watch it frequently with my Jacob.) There's a lot of action - the plot is simple and easily grasped, and the dialogue is vintage Lucas - subtle as a jackhammer. It's almost as though this film were made for kids . . . hey wait! You don't think . . .? LOL ;-) It's fun, but don't expect a sci-fi classic - not even close. I think somewhere along the way I got under the impression that Lucas would try to redeem himself with this by making a good sci-fi film, but alas, this ain't it. Like I said, it's entertaining, and it's fun - go with no other expectations, and you won't be disappointed. There's my little Tuesday-morning review! I have developed a really bad habit of not proofreading after editing. I was going to write "I'll never be a "Greedo Shot First" person" thought it was a little obnoxious, edited and lost a VERY important word. I blame my random, rambling blogging for my awful editing/proofreading of my own stuff. (Don't tell my employers - that's what I'm paid to do, lol!) Thanks for the review, John - nice to see someone with a better perspective than the gloomy reviews I'd seen! I just remember that no one like the movie at all except me. Crackers brought out the example that you never spray paint a keyboard, as they 'camouflaged' it in the movie, as an example. My stance on the movie (as it is of just about every review of it on IMDB) is that you can't take the technical stuff realistically. As a computer geek myself, I was surprised that a lot of computer geeks here thought the opposite. I liked the way they graphically explained programs and how they worked (cool animated rainbow fractals, etc.) and I loved the 'cool' element of the movie, even if it were unrealistic. Yes, its filled with cheese, a weak story, a never-ending list of technical falsities and improbabilities, but the presentation and acting, I thought were awesome. A real fun move that can't be taken seriously. > I hope my query about Clone Wars wasn't seen as me beating up on anyone. > I was just curious if it was as bad as the reviews I'd read. My line on getting beat up by geeks was more or less comedy. The stereotype we have (geeks) is a bunch of wimpy brainiacs, so I thought the wordplay was funny. > I'm an old school Star Wars freak. Saw the original 27 times in the theater What!? And I thought my 13 times in the theater was a lot! I am so outclassed here. (lol) As for the rest of your message, I'm with you too (except I never made any Star Wars stuff. Though I did have plans to make a X-wing Fighter bed... and glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling... and I half-built a robot...)... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 17:31:26 -0400 From: Merujo Subject: Re: Alloy: Clone Wars Dennis wrote: (re: guys in Hackers) >Johnny Lee Miller (Trainspotting).
