We have some pretty good music venues in the Denver area. Of course, my
favorite - the one that I kept bugging Thomas to play in, which he
eventually did - is the Gothic Theater here in Englewood CO.

It is one of those old movie houses that followed the familiar story of a
movie house in the early 20th century becoming a porn theater in the 70's,
later scheduled for demolition only to be bought at the last moment to
become a premier music venue. The other theater here in Denver with a
similar story is the Bluebird Theater. It is not quite as nice as the
Gothic, but still a good small-size venue.

For large concerts here in Colorado, you can't beat Red Rocks Amphitheater.

I'm sure we all remember Nickelodeon's showing of U2-Under A Blood Red Sky
back in the 80's and thinking - what a cool looking place. It is. The
trick is that you have to get there early for general seating. Get there
late and you have a great view of the city lights below, but the band
appears to be miles away as well.

Another favorite is the Boulder Theater, but it is a bit more of a drive for
me.

Anton, I bet you have some killer clubs in Amsterdam. Here in DC we have a
handful of really great music venues and a lot of mediocre ones.

I miss all the cool little clubs where I used to go to hear music in London
in the 80s - Mean Fiddler, Town & Country, places whose names I can't recall
(and probably are long gone), even the student union at the University of
London, all hosted some great gigs.

I've never been to hear any music in continental Europe (I'm not counting
the folk singers who would belt out tunes at the Taganka Bar in Moscow while
the contortionist performed.) What great places would you recommend for
going to hear good music/new music or just hang when visiting?

That goes for folks all over. What spot do you love for hearing the tunes in
your neck o' the woods?

If you're ever in my good old hometown, I'd recommend the Rock Island
Brewing Company in Rock Island, Illinois. Great little venue. Good place to
hear the blues (appropriate in the town that mythically spawned the Blues
Brothers, if the liner notes from "A Briefcase Full of Blues" is to be
believed.) Last time I was there, though, I have to admit it was to see Mojo
Nixon, and I'd had a couple of belts before he came on stage to sing "Elvis
is Everywhere." So, things may have changed over the years. :)

Anton, consider Ouderkerk aan de Amstel added to the list!

Cheers,

Melissa
