I'm one of the Crowdies here. I love their music but don't keep up with what they are doing (I'm so out of it I didn't know they had gotten back together). I had no idea they have a new album out. That's great to hear! Their reception is reminiscent of BT's at the Orlando House of Blues. People were insanely drunk by the time he started and one heckler kept throwing the F-bomb at him. He ignored it completely (perhaps he was so into his performance that he didn't hear it?). Makes me wonder how artists handling that kind of nastiness. Sounds like Neil Finn handled it well, and with humor. Register. Evidently their Coachella reunion set was pretty rocky, but not because the band isn't in great form. http://www.ocregister.com/ocregister/entertainment/abox/article_1676371.php - --- 12. Crowded House. What a valiant return, what a terrible time and place to appear, what a shameful reaction the band received. It made no sense to put Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, Mark Hart and their L.A.-based drummer on the main stage at sundown when the throngs at the front of the stage had staked out spots for Rage (at the Machine) as early as noon. They had already been patient through Willie Nelson, obviously not their cup o' tea, and now they had to endure some of the finest crafted pop-rock of the last two decades -- when all they wanted was a tension release. In retrospect, it's probably not much of a surprise that Finn more than once had to quell the crowd's overflowing enthusiasm and cries of "Rage! Rage! Rage!" Now does it now seem like such a shocker that as Finn was about to go into the chorus of "Don't Dream It's Over" some jackass hurled a water bottle at him, hitting his microphone stand and his guitar -- and knocking his mic off its clip. Finn had to pull back, try to recover by getting the crowd to sing the chorus for him -- and not many did. It was a sad experience for longtime House fans who had waited for this reunion -- and an embarrassment to true, open-minded, respectful Rage fans everywhere. Not to assume the bottle-hurler was a Rage fan; that just makes sense. In any case, I imagine Morello and de la Rocha would have chided him for his lack of decency -- especially considering that "Don't Dream It's Over" so beautifully complements the sense of peace and love that was so pervasive here. It started as a clarion call -- and so early in a Crowded House set! But it was stupidly muted almost instantly. On the up side, Finn, who looked cooler than he has since his Split Enz days, quickly recovered from that setback, and with characteristic good humor didn't make an issue out of it. "It was a good shot, I must say," he told the crowd. Then, eyeing the thrower, he added: "But I'll see the next one coming." Clearly the incident squashed the momentum the band had from the get-go, with a roaring take on "When You Come," but the rest of the set held many strong standouts: "Fall at Your Feet," a kicking "Locked Out," especially a moving rendition of "Silent House," a Dixie Chicks song Finn co-wrote. There's a new Crowded House album due in July on ATO Records. Expect they will return, then -- and get a proper SoCal welcome. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V12 #72 ***************************
