["Brian Price" Subject: Alloy: My friend Brian on David Letterman TONIGHT! Hey everyone! For those of you in the US, one of my best friends is going to be on David Letterman tonight. He just finished make-up and is going to be filming in about an hour. The segment is stupid human tricks, and my friends trick is that he can stop a ceiling fan with his tongue. If you see a 67 guy on national TV sticking his tongue on a spinning ceiling fan, that will be my friend. Makes a guy proud, ya know? Im not sure how they will set up this trick, but it should be interesting to watch. Set your Tivos and DVRs to record! Take care! Brian Take care! Hi Beth! I could totally see that "Istanbul Not Constantinople" would be a great kids' song! I don't think Jacob's ever heard it (or at least the TMBG version) so we'll have to introduce him to it. The TMBG DVD to which I refer is called "Here Come The ABCs." It's out on the Disney Sound label, and has a bunch of great songs about the alphabet and other such things. It has great puppets and animations, and live action as well. It's every bit as entertaining for mom & dad as it is for the little ones--truly great stuff. I exaggerate quite a bit when I say that Jacob "knows most of TMDR's lyrics." Truth is that he tends to wear out a handful of songs that he DOES have completely memorized (Europa, Leipzig, among others) but knows little snippets of most of the others (the hook, usually, as is also the case with most adults.) We're not super uptight about adult language either, but if I'm close by, I'll grab the remote and mute the sound when Thomas asks the age old question about the Pope shitting in the woods (and oddly, the first time I ever heard AAMB, I knew that he meant to say that, but probably chose not to in order to avoid a fight with the label.) I haven't given up on the notion of protecting Jacob's innocent young mind from really bad language, but I've also realized that task becomes increasingly difficult in the world as it is today. I'm frankly a little surprised that he hasn't been more corrupted at his age by school or other social activities. I remember very clearly the day that a friend taught me the "f-word" and gave me a very detailed description of the act associated with it when I was in kindergarten. So, all things considered, we're doing alright thus far. The "Name Game" song has become a favorite of Jacob's (you know--"Jimmy Jimmy Bo Bimmy Banana Fanna Fo Fimmy" etc etc.) This was all fine until he sang the names of all his classmates, including one "Tucker." Christa asked him nicely not to do Tucker any more, and explained that it caused him to say a bad word. He begged with us to tell him which word was bad among them, so like I said, we're doing alright thus far. I was a little disappointed with Thomas' last podcast with the salty language at the end--luckily Jacob was out playing when I watched it (and it had become a bit of a ritual for him to join me to watch each week's new installment together.) As an adult, my language occasionally detours into the gutter as well, but I guess it just came out of left field a bit from Thomas--I have read and enjoyed blog posts in which he uses some saltier language, and I love the "Karma/Dogma" lyrical modification he makes when playing live, but this just caught me off guard. But at the end of the day--DON'T GO ALL SQUISHY-SOFT G-RATED DISNEY ON US THOMAS!!! One good thing--while computer technology opens an entirely new stream of garbage into the home that didn't exist when we were kids, it also enables password protection--we also use password protection for cable TV as well. We exercise quite a bit of control over what Jacob sees and hears this way. Check out the TMBG DVD--you and your kids will flip--it's REALLY REALLY good! Dear Alloy Folks, It's been 10 years since Alloy had it's first "world tour" t-shirt design. And, a decade down the line, I think we're due! I'm sorting out the logistics now, but I'll shortly post the announcement and rules for a t-shirt design contest open to all Alloy members. The winner will get one of the brand-spankin' new t-shirts as a prize, and the winning design will available on all sorts of merchandise in a private Alloy CafePress store I've set up (all the goodies will be available at the CafePress base prices - no moolah will be made and no animals will be harmed in the making of these tees!) I hope lots of folks will want to toss their design ideas into the ring! The whole group will vote on the design, so everyone will have a part in the creation of this sucker. So, start pondering, and I'll post the info shortly! Cheers, Melissa - --------------------------------- Finding fabulous fares is fun. Let Yahoo!
