Good writing too. I forgot to thank you for this earlier. I'm always fascinated by advances in technology. I'm reading an old book by Craig Anderton on Alesis' HR-16 and MMT-8. (Thanks to Thomas' inspiration I've dusted these old things off and am digging in.) It covers old tech but he brings up a point over and over again that despite advances in machinery it still takes an artist to make things strike a chord in the human psyche. He says there's no 'feel' button on the console. No "Jeff Porcaro" slider. And then proceeds to explain how one can get a machine to sing like a human. It's one of the things I've always loved in Thomas' work. I hadn't thought about the sound board operator needing to be an artist too. Thanks for the great links! I discovered somewhere along the way that continually surrounding myself with more and better technology was not making me a better songwriter or musician. I have realized that I am a far better technician than I am a creator of music, so my focus stays in the technical now, and I simply admire those who write and sing and play well. Craig Anderton is an acquaintance of mine, and one of my long-time idols among audio tech writers. I have spent many a Saturday afternoon with a hot soldering iron in one hand and an Anderton text in the other. BTW--you are a brave man dusting off that MMT-8! The HR-16 is a nice module with some serviceable sounds, but I've become so spoiled with Digital Performer, Logic, Cubase, Tracktion, Pro Tools--I could never go back to a hardware MIDI sequencer (although Peter Grenader and Steve Roach almost have me convinced on analog sequencing again!) God I love to talk tech! jm PS In case you were not aware, there is an MMT-8 website: http:// www.mmt8.com/ Have fun! On Feb 8, 2007, at 9:46 AM, Patrick McMillan wrote: > > Yeah John, > Great post. You're right about the MMT-8. It just looks nice next to its mate. I'm not using it though. I'm playing with Logic and Garageband. Thanks for the MMT-8 link! Also: Tell Craig he rocks! I love his writing.
