Do you think his response was, "What's your handle?" or "How many years have you followed the list?" Nope, not surprisingly it was, "Do you know Merujo?" Really? Ha! Did you hear him mutter the words "restraining order" at the same time? (Just kidding!) Really. ;-) Here's to more Dolby live in our time zone again soon! Hey, kids! Happy New Year to you all! In case you sleep through Weekend Edition, like I did this morning, go ye forth to NPR.org and listen to the interview with Thomas (done on Friday, 12/22) and click on the tracks to hear in-NPR-studio tuneage, including... wait for it... "Airwaves." Ahhhh. Oh, the happiness! Not like you wouldn't, but be sure to listen to the fun "Your Karma Hit My Dogma" - which is noted as "Song For Kevin Federline", LOL... If I'm not mistaken, I hear the sound of Ben Grossman playing that funkadelic hurdy-gurdy in "Karma." Here's the link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6701720 And if you dig the sound of that hurdy-gurdy, you can learn more about Ben (who played with BT on tour) on his myspace music page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=52874981 Remember, if you're in SoCal, you can always catch Thomas (and a lot of other musical-type folks) tonight at the Orange County NYE celebration: http://www.ocnye.com/ I get the impression this will be one helluva blow-out way to end the year. A few weeks back, the myspace page for the guy who organizes this event excitedly noted that they got a permit to have alcohol sales locations all throughout the venue this year, so I would expect a massive number of happy, drunken revelers. (And more than one guy yelling "SCIENCE!") ;-) I wish each and every one of you a very happy new year. May 2007 be a very fine one for us all. Today, thanks to Mother Nature threatening to unleash more havoc in Colorado, I get to spend part of the last day of this year with one of our cool Colorado Alloy folks, Keith, the sole inhabitant, himself. A very fitting way to farewell Dolby-fest 2006. Cheers, Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com Tired of spam? Yahoo! Very cool! I can't, however, get the NPR interview to play past the Nokia portion. It just stops and stubbornly refuses to go from there. Hopefully, it's a problem on NPR's end. I can't get the music files to play at all. Did you see, on TMDR's blog, that he hopes to throw together Ferrari this afternoon and perform it tonight!? That is so awesome. I wish I could be there. Hey Thomas, feels like the old days, doesn't it! Seat-of-your-pants performing must be quite a rush -- and these days, you have a lot more confidence going in, what, between the better equipment and tons of practice this year. Just awesome. I feel so happy for him. It warms the heart to see an artist enjoying his art. Melissa, Yes, that is Ben's hurdy gurdy on 'Karma.' When I saw TMDR in Orlando I shared seating with Ben's brother. He said there is a running joke in their family that about how Ben managed to create an electric hurdy gurdy, which apparently was never meant to be modernized. He also said it is of French origins (for those who might be interested in this tidbit). Yeah Melissa, knock off the booze until tonight! Thanks for the links and the great poetic revelry inducing write-up all the same. ! I'd say you're carrying the torch rather successfully. I slept through the broadcast too. (mmm....booze!) And to Elaine: I can't get the recent interview to play on my mac. (The 1993 interview plays fine, and so do the music links.) I downloaded the new real player too. Must be all of those thousands of Dolby fans hitting NPR at the same time. Going to try the PC now to see if that fixes it. Hurdy Gurdy trivia: I have a friend in France who plays the Vielle a roue, a type of hurdy-gurdy. He likes to call himself the "Jose Bove" of the north and makes fun of us Americans for having built a Disneyland in his backyard, almost literally. He is an apologist for medieval French culture and would get a laugh to hear that Grossman has midified it. Mon Dieu. Pas ca. Does anyone know if this is easy to do, by the way? I'd love to send him a link or instructions. Or was it just amplified? Anne and I got to see the BTTDT in Austin and couldn't tell through that wall of sound what tool was generating which sound. It was cool though. Loud. Pulsating. Trancelike. PM On Dec 31, 2006, at 4:49 PM, Lunesse Moon wrote: > > Psssst. > > The npr version is sans Ben....
