Of course you're right, Keith.. I'm sorry that I didn't take better care
to convey my emotion properly. I was going for a cheeky lighthearted
tone, not one of complete envy. I have nothing to be envious about!
I've seen Thomas play live this year, and English Beat too, just like you
said.

I just saw footage of Denver on the news this morning. Hope all you
Colorodans are faring okay in that blizzard!

Hi, folks,

I'm still feeling under the weather, just in recovery mode from last week's bug-a-rama. I want to give you a good review of last night's Baltimore show, but I can't put much coherent verbiage together today. So forgive the disjointed ramble below...

Quick points:

1. "My Karma Hit Your Dogma" - what a hoot! If you haven't heard it yet, you'll love it when you do. Great, funky, and funny.
2. "Airwaves" - let's face it - just getting to hear it is close to a religious experience. We all know that. We're lucky to hear it. I'm such an old school wuss, I would really, really love to hear it bare bones - just TMDR and keyboard - but it's clearly an evolving, cooperative effort between TMDR and BT on tour, and it's neat to see them working this together. They had a false start - some sort of problem with BT's output from his laptop, I think. I was immediately in front of Thomas' set-up for the gig. I had this momentary fear that, if it didn't work, maybe he would skip the song. Without really thinking, I yelled, "It's okay! I've waited more than twenty years to hear this! I'll wait a couple of minutes more!" Aaaand, immediately felt like a total dork. (I'm certain he didn't hear me.)
3. I really liked BT's TBU. You have to approach it as a sort of symphonic soundscape. For me (with judicious wearing of earplugs) it was really soothing and atmospheric.
4. Thomas seemed to really be having fun and was more comfortable, to my eye, than in the spring gigs. There were times when he had these brilliantly demented smiles and gestures that really brought back the face of 20 years ago. And for someone who had the Tour Bus Creeping Crud just a few days prior, I think he was doing really dang well.
5. No meet & greet at the show - BT (who is from Maryland) had his family there. At the end of his set, after an emotional piece written for/about his daughter, he looked out at his family and said, "Well, I made my mom cry, so I must be doing something right!"
6. Kick-ass cover of "Mad World." Holy crow!
7. Lunesse is a sweetheart. Plain and simple. :-)
8. TMDR got a great, great response from BT's young fans.
9. Slightly grotty venue, but warm, happy audience.
10. There is something about hearing music you love in the company of good friends... it's the best.

Gotta wrap up work here and go home. I'm not laundered, I'm not packed, and I'm on a plane to Chicago in the morning. Thought I was flying to San Francisco on 1/1/07, but no go. So, I'll start the new year right here in DC.

Happy holidays to you all! Merry Christmakwanzakkuh and a happy Solstice today!

Cheers,

Melissa

I took it as lighthearted envy :). I'm a little envious of those getting to
see the new songs too. I hope we at least get to see those sometime on
iTunes or by podcast. I can't be too envious considering there are those on
this list who have not seen Thomas live at all this year

I'm faring fine, but stuck at home. Unfortunately I was supposed to be
flying into Washington DC right now in order to drive down to my brother's
house in North Carolina for Christmas. Not only am I at risk of not being
able to visit family for Christmas, I also missed out on having lunch today
with our favorite DC area Alloy member.

I haven't even been able to call Frontier Airlines to change my flight. I
tried calling as late as 2:00 AM last night and get nothing but "all
circuits are busy" messages. They say 4800 people are stuck in the airport,
so I guess I should be thankful to be at home, nice and warm, basking in the
glow of the LCD monitor.

For those who would like to see what we got here, you can check out my snow

Thomas Dolby + BT

Thurs., Dec. 21, 7:30pm. $21-$29. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St.
215.222.1400. www.worldcafelive.com

Early MTV stalwart Thomas Dolby left synth-pop for Silicon Valley in the
early-'90s, investing in a polyphonic ringtone software now used in more
than half a billion cell phones. (So for once you don't have to turn your
phone off during the show.) Dolby most definitely won't be playing his big
hit this evening -- he burned out on that before you graduated high
school -- but he is bringing a rig of vintage 1940s oscilloscopes and
ex-Royal Navy field test equipment to, er, blind you with science. He'll
join forces with audio/visual artist BT, whose This Binary Universe
matches computer-generated music with animation. (Jennifer Kelly)

Hi, all;

Just checking in to say we're all fine (my kids and husband and I, that is)
and have amazingly enough had reliable power this whole time. But yesterday
was pretty stressful, when all of us underestimated how bad the roads were
going to get and went out to various places in the late morning (husband to
his office in Boulder just to restart a process on a server; daughter to a
playdate at a house normally only a ten-minute drive away; son and I to my
office to pick up the honey-baked ham I'd ordered). Thankfully, we all made
it home and didn't have to leave any vehicles by the side of the road, but
it took my husband FOUR HOURS to make the normally 20-minute drive home from
Boulder. I had to do some quick thinking at a number of intersections, and
the woman giving my daughter a ride home had to stop and help a stuck car.

The kids have had a wonderful time plowing through the snow up to their
waist or higher in the back yard, and making the six-foot-high piles caused
by shoveling in the front into snow forts. My husband decided to walk to
the nearby grocery store this afternoon, and found there were bits where he
had to slog through snow up to his waist. (Pity he went out wearing shorts,
with boots that just went to below the knee.)

We have some great pictures too, but it may be a while before we have time
to upload them!

Okay, maybe saying "moron" is a little mean. But "brites" in newspapers that
aren't accurate are a pet peeve of mine. "Brites" are the wee soundbite
pieces, like this quickie item about the gig, you find in different sections
of a newspaper.

Back in college, I got into a pissing match with the editor of my hometown
newspaper because they'd published an article about a "hero mother of the
Soviet Union" - a woman who gave birth to twelve or more children. The
headline read: "Hero Mother Gives Birth To Twelfth Babushka." Babushka means
grandmother in Russian. I wrote to the paper and told them that they really
should do a little research before using foreign words. The editor called me
back and told me I was a nasty spoilsport, trying to make the paper look
bad. This went on for a while. I think I called him an idiot at one point.
In the end, he wrote an editorial about how "brites" were just there to
brighten our lives and inform us, and how sad it was there were people out
there that couldn't look beyond "the small mistakes." Grandmother... baby...
yeeeeeah. Small mistake. ;-)

Cranky and still not packed,

Melissa

Last night, I was ready to pack my bags for some time by the bay. But my

need for me to go and spend a day with the cranky curators at this museum...

The closest I'm getting to San Francisco is a box of Rice-a-Roni at
