The reason some may remember me is because I wrote to Thomas and he wrote back, copying both my letter and his reply here on Alloy. I believe these letters can be found in the archive around October of '98 (or there abouts). Thomas's response to my letter is intersting to read, now that several years have passed since his writing. Among other things, he discusses the possibility of getting back into music, and that he recorded something (turned out to be the "Forty" album). Anyway, the reason I'm posting now is because Thomas asked me to. I felt like a fool telling him I was no longer subscribed to Alloy and thought I'd better rectify that. So, here I am. (I've also posted what follows on Thomas's forum. For those who visit there, you may have already read this.) As I'm sure you all know, Thomas played in Orlando, FL this past Saturday (12/16). My husband and I attended this concert, along with our two young girls (our babysitter canceled), so this was their first concert. I was among the lucky ones who went to the Meet and Greet after the show at Orlando's House of Blues. It was at the M&G Thomas asked me to write about the collaboration between BT and himself on "Airwaves." How can I refuse such a request? About the song: It started with what appeared to be the end of Thomas's set. He had played for well over an hour (I think closer to two hours) and had already done an encore. BT came onto the stage, and Thomas introduced him. Instead of leaving the stage, as I expected, Thomas began "Airwaves," and BT joined him. It was an interesting version, in a good way ("Airwaves" remains one of my favorites from TGAOW). While the song was clearly the one I know, it also wasn't. BT used a computer to add stutters (a term I read somewhere else about BT's work, and it fits perfectly here) and other electronic sounds not in the original version. It was like listening to a club version of "Airwaves," as I found it a more bouncy version. I was sitting in the Opera Box, which is on the second level, slightly behind the stage. The stage was directly below me, and I could see what the audience could not, even if the curtain was closed. I was fascinated by BT during this song. He was using (to my untrained eyes) a computer, not a keyboard, to add his sounds. While bopping to the music, he would press a button on his keyboard, bop some more, press another button, and so on. Thomas told me at the Meet and Greet this was the first time the two had played together. I understand they did the same thing the following night, and I encourage them to continue to do so, as this was a great collaboration. I missed hearing Thomas play on "Satellite" (I was busy getting my camera for the meeting after the show) but my husband said it was one of the best songs he'd heard. He liked it so much he was mad I missed it. I offer this to Thomas and BT - Your fans CLEARLY welcome your working together. Please consider recording these two songs together for release, or, at the least, tape them and make them available for podcasts (I'd purchase this, no matter how you made it available). Also, PLEASE include the hurdy gurdy when you (Thomas) record your new song. My husband and I loved it, and I heard MANY people talking positively about it as I walked around the venue. For those who haven't yet heard the new song ("My Karma Hit Your Dogma" or something very close to that), it's a great song. Well worth waiting for, whether you hear it live or recorded. I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Lunesse. She is a joy to meet (she can be found at the merchandise table). No matter how busy things got, she always had a smile on her face. She is full of positive energy. Looking forward to any new music from Thomas the future may hold, Rochelle ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2006 13:37:14 -0800 (PST) From: Melissa Jordan Subject: Re: Alloy: Introducing myself and reviewing "Airwaves" with BT Oh my gosh - I remember that post. Your review was very well put. I agree about buying the new material as I would definitely buy any podcast of the new version of Airwaves, Karma, or anything that was released. Since I wasn't able to go to any of the fall shows, the only way I'll hear Karma is from a Podcast or as a new iTune release. Take care. I'm neeznoodle there (and sometimes Rochelle, if I enter the wrong password information). If I recall, you are suffering from a nasty stomach flu? If so, it's probably too late now, but for future reference get some activated charcoal tablets. They can be hard to find, but I get mine in Target's pharmacy area. I recently had the stomach flu, was probably less than an hour from getting sick, when I thought to try the charcoal. I did some research and learned charcoal is used for many types of poisonings, including food poisoning. You pretty much can't overdose on it, but there are no real suggestions for dosage. What the charcoal does (in total layman terms) is find and stick to the poisons, and takes them safely out of your system. I decided to try it for my flu. Within an hour, I felt noticably better. A few hours later I was 80% back to normal. A few weeks later my six-year-old daughter felt ill. At one point she was actually writhing on the floor and moaning from the stomach pain. I decided to give her some charcoal, and she had the exact same experience I had. I suggest starting with two tablets, then taking more as needed. I even keep charcoal in my purse, as you never know when food poisoning will strike. Good luck and feel better (if you are the one I remember who is ill). From what Thomas has said in his concerts this fall he will have new music in 2007. I don't doubt the Karma song will be included with whatever he releases. I just hope he includes the hurdy gurdy (it's sort of like a crank violin) when he records it.
