One more thing I can scratch off my list of things to do before I die. Meet Thomas Dolby. ( not that I plan on dieing anytime soon ) He was a gracious host and took time to actually talk to us. The gig was not altogether flawless as during Hyperactive Mr. Dolby's mic came unplugged, but being the consummate professional he continued on and the problem was corrected relatively quickly, as he made a joke of it and continued. Also a minor glitch as he was " building " The Flat Earth it took a few takes to get it right. The sound was incredible. I have watched The Sole Inhabitant DVD several times and it seemed so much better live. Can't wait to see him again tonight as he is playing in my home town!! St. Pete, Fla who would have ever thought? As Jeff noted in his review of the concert, it was an awesome show. The show was scheduled to start around 9pm with a (i believe) local opening act. I heard from "some drunk girl" that there was a contract dispute with that opening performer, so he didn't show. Since the show started late it also ended pretty late. The meet & greet wasn't until after BT, so it wasn't until around 1:30am. The following is the playset but I am not sure if it is the exact the order he played. leipzig one of our submarines i live in a suitcase windpower the flat earth budapest by blimp your karma hit my dogma europa and the pirate twins hyperactive may the cube be with you airhead she blinded me with science hotsauce airwaves (w/BT) Thomas came on around 10pm as scheduled and opened with Leipzig as usual. As the floor of the HOB was not crowded, I had a great spot right in front of the stage. The spot was interesting with the way that the audio was configured. There were speakers on the sides of the stage, and in dead center of the stage. From the sides was the sound of the synths, and from the center was his voice. Since I was closer to the center, I could hear the vocals clearly but the subtleties of the music were a bit muddy. It probably sounded better from further away. He mentioned that he hasn't performed in Orlando since 1988, which would have been during the Aliens tour. I did get to see him during that tour, but in St Petersburg. The St Petersbug, FL show should be going on right this moment while I am writing. I would have loved to go to that show too, but I have some family company in town tonight for dinner. It is a 2 hour drive to St Pete, and we would never have made it. Most of the concert went without incident. There was the accidental mic unplugging at the beginning of Hyperactive, and after the song he noted that Darren (i assume his tech roadie since he was also mentioned in John McJunkin's post) was taking a piss when it happened. So the Thomas fans in the crowd decided to help out and started singing the words for him. I found out at the meet & greet that he couldn't hear this due to his earplug headphones. He also did seem to have some sequencing problems at the beginning of a few songs, but he would just clear out that part and do it again. I would bet that most of the crowd would never have noticed. No matter how many times I see him build a song on stage, it still amazes me. He is the absolute master of layered music, and he makes it seem effortless. The new Karma song was pretty good. Definitely dance-able and would probably get some cult-club popularity like airhead. He told a story about how he started the song in '93, and was inspired by the k-fed incident to finish it off. The full story of this can be read in Keith Stansell's earlier post. Definitely fit in with the Aliens style music with its sarcastic humor that he did a few years earlier in '88. I haven't seen this mentioned in any of the messages before, but one of the guys from BT's band joined Thomas on stage for this song. The guy had an instrument called a hurdy gurdy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurdygurdy), which added a fascinating sound to the song. I hope that Thomas can keep good communication with this musician as it added quite a neat dimension to the song. Hmm, Airwaves, one of my favorite songs. Thomas came back out onto stage for a kind of second encore. This time Darren pushed out Thomas' road case with an Apple laptop and some type of controller on top, and BT came out and joined Thomas on stage. Darren then proceeded to hook up BT's rig into Thomas'. Thomas started playing Airwaves. BT then signaled Thomas to stop and hold on. I am not sure what the technical problem was but it was resolved quickly. Thomas began playing and singing again. The voice modulation that Thomas used was unusual, and didn't sound very good. It also sounded like BT and Thomas were out of sync for a while at the beginning of the song. To be truly honest, I am not sure what BT was adding to the song. Between taking sips from a can of Miller Light, he would move the mouse and hit a button on his laptop. For all we know he could have been playing a game of solitaire. I think being fairly late in the tour, we got the benefit of Thomas gradually adding new songs to the set. But unfortunately there was one song missing from the set, Flying North. I asked Thomas about it at the meet & greet, and he said that he had been having some technical difficulties during that song lately, so he had cut it out of the set. After the Thomas performance, we went out on the patio to hang out until after BT's performance. I have heard that Thomas did come out and do some stuff with BT and I missed that stuff, but I just couldn't get into listening to BT's music. If the HOB had the monitors going on the porch, I may have gone in for those songs, but alas they didn't. People-watching the drunk, high, and/or tripping people wandering around were enough to keep me entertained during the BT portion of the show. Finally was the meet and greet, which we almost missed. Since we were on the porch at HOB, we didn't realize the concert had ended. We went to the place and were the last ones to get in to see Thomas and BT. When we (my wife and I) got in there, we went straight to Thomas at the table. In hind sight, we completely ignored BT, which was probably a bit on the rude side, but we were all very tired. Since we were the last ones in, I could tell that Thomas was tired and probably had a cozy bed running through his mind, so we got one of our concert shirts signed, talked for a minute or two and went on our way. We were thrilled to be there to experience Thomas' music again and hope that it is not going to be 18 years before he visits Orlando again. - -Russell Milliner http://www.tmdrfan.com P.S. I'll be posting this review tomorrow on the forum, too. I also have some camera phone pics of Thomas and BT from the show that I'll be posting on my website. Currently, my website is in SERIOUS need of a complete makeover, and I'll probably make myself a new years resolution to "make that so". If anyone has any ideas, content, etc of what they'd like to see on the website, let me know. I would like to be a complimentary site to the official site, but they have been doing a wonderful job of providing content and information there. I just got back from the St.Pete show. Thomas remarked that he never remembered playing here but thought he had played Tampa around 1988. I spoke with Lunesse and she said it was their last of 12 performances and that the big shots were headed off by plane tomorrow as she and the crew had a day off before a five night stance and then off for the holidays. The show was great and again the sound amazed me. Thomas graciously autographed my concert shirt from the HOB Orlando show which I wore to the concert tonight. There was no meet and greet tonight which was somewhat of a disappointment however I respect Thomas's privacy and by chance on my way to my car Thomas was literally living in a suitcase as we passed the tour bus he was removing his suitcases and after a quick encounter I left him alone as not to invade his privacy. Also to make note of there was a girl taking pictures from Camel cigarettes and she noticed my shirt had me sign a waiver to take some pictures of me. Fine with me as long as Thomas sees some back end money from this. I will monitor their sight to see if I show up. I'm not sure what percentage of alcohol played in my evaluation but I must say Airhead was spot on. The sound seemed toned down a bit which led to a much better overall perception. Nothing better than having the bass pulsate through your body as you hear and watch you idol craft his music. It seemed as though the crowd was much more there to see Thomas than BT. No disrespect to BT but several people commented to me that they were shocked that Thomas was the opening act rather than the headliner. No matter it was great to see Thomas literally just a few miles from my sole inhabitance and a night that will be etched in my mind forever. Thank you Thomas for all your hard work and efforts, I can't wait till 2024 Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2006 21:34:24 -0800 (PST) From: Elaine Subject: Re: Alloy: So, Russ... how was it???
