Apparently he played the same set that he played at the Aspen show, per a review in the forum: Budapest By Blimp Leipzig Is Calling One Of Our Submarines I Live In A Suitcase The Flat Earth Your Karma Hit My Dogma May The Cube Be With You Europa And The Pirate Twins Airhead She Blinded Me With Science Hot Sauce (Encore) For those who have seen the previous shows or the DVD, Flying North and Windpower were missing from the set list. I'm not sure if that is due to his voice, or a desire to keep the show more upbeat for the BT audience (although based on the two BT songs I stuck around for, they seem to like the slow ambient stuff). I missed seeing Windpower, I really like that live. But hey, I've seen it 5 times - and the DVD does it justice. I felt bad for one guy in the audience near the front. During one of the between song breaks, he raised his hand to ask a question. I don't think I've ever seen that before - most people just shut out. So Thomas comes to the front of the stage and says - yes, you have a question? And the question the guy asked was "Were you aware that Windpower is the best song ever written?" It was sort of an odd question. Thomas said thanks and something to the effect that the guy gets a free poster. I think Thomas was a bit disappointed as the rest of us that it wasn't a more interesting question. I felt sorry for the guy since that song was not in the set list. New in the set since the last time I saw him was May The Cube Be With You. Hot Sauce was also something that has been added that was not in the earlier tour shows or DVD. He did perform that one at the Boulder show though. He really had to go lower with his vocals on Science. It sounded quite different. He also left out most of the chorus on The Flat Earth and the end of Suitcase was instrumental only. In a way, for me it was a bit refreshing. I really appreciated how powerful the music at the end of Suitcase was when you strip away the vocals. As far as the audience goes, I think there were more there to see BT than TD. Perhaps this was due to this being TD's 3rd show here this year. The BT fans seemed to really get into Thomas and moved from the back of the house to the front as his set progressed. There was a lot more dancing than I've seen at other shows. It was another good show and my last for the year. I think 6 shows in a year by one artist is enough. Stevie D. might disagree with me on that :-). - -Keith ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2006 11:03:59 -0000 From: "p1latham" Subject: Alloy: Dolby in Europe - Please Go on,I admit it,im jealous of you guys who have been getting to see Thomas gigs in the US , some of you many times, but please spare a thought for us long term fans who have still not managed to see him. Oh yes we had 2 opportunities in London this year - but only one solo gig - and as I work for the Emergency Services there are heavy restrictions on 'leave '(vacations) at peak summer times especially when working in a holiday town. Thus I couldn't get time off work and therefore after being a fan for over 25 years , still haven't seen him live. Please Thomas its great that your touring again - but there are many fans over here, please don't forget us. Boo Hoo - Winge over. Dennis and Teresa weren't able to make it tonight. We did meet Dennis' brother in law at the show. We let him and his friends have our meet-n-greet passes so they could meet BT. Thomas was not doing the meet-n-greet tonight due to being under the weather. Still, even though he was sick, Thomas came out very cheerful and upbeat. He said that usually he comes out and talks about how many years it has been since he played in that city - but in the case of Denver, it hasn't been that long. Technically though, I bet he never played in Englewood CO before. He said due to the cold he had, he had three options on the songs - drop them an octave, make them instrumentals, and.. I can't remember the third option - help me Beth or Eric. He said he would sing the lower keyed songs first due to his voice. So instead of Lipzieg, he started the show with Budapest by Blimp. As he was lowering the keyboard before the song, he mentioned that since it was his third show in the area this year, that - smiling and gesturing to the cool lowering keyboard: "you've seen this right? - you know the story, I'm not going to go over it again - the jokes don't work so well the after you've heard them before". So this time around he didn't really rehash the pre-song stories as he did during the previous shows that I've seen. That's not to say he didn't talk much between songs. He still did, but not the same stories as before. The longest introduction was for the new song - Your Karma Hit My Dogma. Apparently the song got its start back in the 90's, but was never completed. The recent problem with K-Fed brought the song back to him and was his inspiration to finish it. He told a long story about how someone on the forum alerted him to the K-Fed song with the Science sample on My Space. Thomas contacted his lawyer who said he would need to send K-Fed a "cease and desist" order, but they were having trouble getting an address for him. So Thomas signed up to be a friend of K-Fed on MySpace page and posted the order there - probably a first. But apparently a filter that filters out words over 1 syllable blocked the order. He said they finally managed to get him via Britney's people. I liked the new song, and hope he can find a way to get it on i-Tunes soon - perhaps as a bonus track to the Sole Inhabitant CD. The song had a real strong beat mixed with Indian instrumentation. The beat reminded me a little bit of Seal's Killer: http://www.amazon.com/gp/music/wma-pop-up/B00063F8BC001003/ref=mu_sam_wma_00 1_003/102-8016142-2576943 It had that kind of "bomp bomp" power to it, but more upbeat. Very catchy - it had everyone moving. Sorry - I'm having a bit of trouble remembering some of the lyrics. We have been very fortunate this year over here (I still get one more chance to hear TMDR in Baltimore before Xmas - two more had I been able to switch my plane ticket and stay in DC for another day for the Alexandria, VA show.) I hope that the new year brings some solid opportunities for folks in the UK and on the continent to get more chances to hear Dolby live! Of course, after a month in the mobile infirmary, I reckon TMDR & Co. will need a nice long winter's rest before any more traveling plans are considered. :-) Cheers, with sympathy, Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com p1latham wrote: Go on,I admit it,im jealous of you guys who have been getting to see Thomas gigs in the US , some of you many times, but please spare a thought for us long term fans who have still not managed to see him. - --------------------------------- Have a burning question? He actually tended to combine those options in various ways, and the change the melody one was often the most interesting - heck, a lot of artists do that when they are perfectly healthy, just out of boredom! I viewed it as just another example of working within the limitations of your medium to create something new. While I wouldn't want every one of his concerts I saw to be one where he was sick (for his sake as well), it was an interesting variation. And what a trouper! I hope he was able to curl up with some hot tea afterwards and rest up for the next show. There were indeed a fair number of folks there who had been at the Bluebird show earlier this year. I'm pretty sure the "FREEBIRD!" guy was there, though he branched out a little this time. (And like last time, only yelled out stuff in between songs, and only a couple of times.) He was not the "Windpower" guy - who I initially felt for, but then thought got a little pushy about it. I mean, come on, we know you like that song - we do too - but do try to appreciate the ones that *are* being played! Still, in the realm of obnoxious fellow-concertgoers, I've seen FAAAR worse. I really loved the addition of "May the Cube be with You" to the set list. It really was great fun live. The one line I remember from "Your Karma ran over my Dogma" was "...and now you'll be hearing from my lawya" :-) Definitely in the tradition of SBMWS, the fun, quirky songs. I was one of the totally unhip old farts there, to be sure - Land's End turtleneck dress and all (came pretty much straight from my son's violin recital) - but it was nice to look over to my left and see the 3-4 Cute Young Things dancing around enthusiastically. I think that touring with BT is really a great thing for Thomas. It may not be such a boon for BT. When Thomas' set was over, I cleared out of the spot right at the foot of the stage - I now avoid being front-and-center at a concert of a musician I've never heard before (some of you know the story). As I later stood farther back and listened to BT, I was thinking: "Mmmm...relaxing...maybe I should get a copy of the CD for the kids to listen to at bedtime...hmmm...creepy-sounding chords here, maybe not...yawn...well, this is pleasant but I'm about to fall asleep on my feet!" Having a long drive ahead, I was inclinded to head out. We old farts need our sleep. Still, I would be keenly intererested in hearing any collaboration between the two that comes out of this. - -Beth ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2006 09:19:46 -0700 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: RE: Alloy: Dolby in Europe - Please Hi Paul, I'm sorry for you guys. I hope Thomas does make it back there to give you more shows. We've had more than we deserve in the Denver area. I'm not sure how we became so lucky. On the DVD interview, Thomas talks about the incredible reception he received at the Scala show. So, perhaps that will encourage him to return for more. I highly recommend the DVD. It does give a great recreation of the live show, if not even more complete due to longer song introductions and the extras. I know it is no substitute for being there at a live show, but it is a good approximation. Now, if you'd like anyone to blame for us hogging Thomas over here, it would have to be Kathleen. As Thomas said in his short intro to Suitcase last night, he was told to live in the US for a year for tax reasons. But then he met Kathleen, got married, and has been here ever since. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: owner-alloy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-alloy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of p1latham Sent: Monday, December 04, 2006 4:04 AM To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: Alloy: Dolby in Europe - Please Go on,I admit it,im jealous of you guys who have been getting to see Thomas gigs in the US , some of you many times, but please spare a thought for us long term fans who have still not managed to see him. I do get paid to write, after all. Keith's characterization of Karma as having a "bomp bomp" feel is pretty accurate--it's hard to describe, but it has a very playful TMDR-at-his-happiest feel about it. One of the lyrics in the verse (and it repeats several times) is "I hate it when that shit happens to me." I'm hoping he'll do a G-rated version. My 5-year-old has become quite a fan and will want to hear the new stuff. I still feel really bad about it, but we lied to him and told him we were going to an important business meeting on Thursday--he still has no idea we went to see Thomas Dolby. The venue makes it abundantly clear that they DO NOT allow children, otherwise, we may have attempted to smuggle him in. We had a crowd of about 250 in a venue that could hold 400 or more, but with everyone crowded down front, it felt "fuller" than that. Not aware of a formal meet-n-greet. I was going to talk to Lunesse and see if we could say hello, but she was swarmed under at the merch table. Also, I experienced a pretty major computer failure and was unable to complete my Budapest cover so I decided to wait until I have it done before I personally greet Mr. Robertson. Also, our friend Sharon had to catch a flight to Chicago on Friday morning early, and was anxious to get back to Phoenix, so we departed forthwith and got on our way. Next time.
