Well, I had to check it out and yes it is true. Cdbaby lists "The Sole Inhabitant" as a cd or dvd format and an outographed version is offered on his web site. I did ordered an autographed copy along with a regular version and received an ebay from cdbaby that the item (or items) aren't in stock, at the moment, and will be within the next week or two. Has anyone else ordered the cd or dvd? Did anyone else get it yet? If so, what number did anyone else get? (cd and/or dvd) Also, it is mentioned on wikipedia.com (search: Thomas Dolby) that Tom will be releasing new material in 2007. Is this true? Also, Tom's discography is updated to include "The Sole Inhabitant", "One of our Submarines (remix)" and "40" but not all of the hits compilations that came out after Retrospectable. So it's somewhat incomplete... Any word if Thomas was able to gain control or the rights of his past work (music and videos) in order to have it rereleased? (maybe with a deal with cdbaby or perhaps his own label) Any latest word from Thomas on this topic or any other topic? I presume that he would release anything he gets so far as performing live? I can think of at least 100 or so Alloy members who would buy it on release day!! I watched it last night. The sounds great, looks pretty good. I'd prefer anamorphic widescreen from high definition source, but I guess Thomas and Johnny had to go with what they could in the time and budget they had. Sometimes the camera folks in Boston get a bit too creative and have a hard time deciding where to point the camera, but that is ok. The mix between camera shots and Johnny's videos is just about right. The coolest video segments from the live show are there - most notably the visuals that go with Windpower. The introductions to the songs are longer than they were in the five (five?!) shows that I saw this year. The reasoning as to why Thomas was 'flying north again' makes more sense now. Again, I won't spoil the extras, but I will say that the interview is very extensive and has some interesting tidbits in there as well that I hadn't heard before. It really gives you a sense of where Thomas is musically, the reasoning behind the tour and what is next. There is talk of new material in 2007, but no hard timelines because of the freedom from record company pressure. The DVD got me excited to see the show again this Sunday. If there are any Denver area Alloy members new to the list, email me off the list and I'll let you in on the Alloy pre-show get together at my house. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: owner-alloy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-alloy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Melissa Jordan Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2006 9:15 AM To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: Re: Alloy: Whoo hoo - it's here! I got my DVD (non-otto) yesterday. And tickets to hear Thomas in Austin on Wednesday! New music in the works! I can't believe this dream is coming true! If CDbaby is sending 'out of stock' messages already does that mean the 1st edition is sold out!?! That 15 years hiatus must have been a good rest cuz' it sure seems like a hella lotta work to orchestrate these releases, tours, website, podcasts, blog...and last but not least: MENTORING. I can't think of any other artist who gives so much support to his fans, so much openness, insight... I'm playing with Garageband after seeing Thomas use its grown-up cousin Logic at the Red Devil for his renaissance. My compositions all sound a little "romper roomy" though. I'm pretty sure it's not the software's fault. Then I get to watch Thomas construct his pieces and I experience the same little epiphanies I used to get when watching drummers' left hands: "So that's how he does it!" Then I realized something tantalizing. If Logic can print out sheet music from performances then is it possible Thomas might also release the 'Sole Inhabitant Tour Songbook'? Seeing how he thinks up or uses chords and voicings like these would be inspiring. http://www.tmdaexhibits.com/Db6.jpg It's like he hears music in the wind, in rust, in sand. I know Thomas mentioned a couple of blogs back that the autographed CDs would be delayed by about a week or so due to a little shipping "mishap." You can try, but I think you will always be "out-hipped" by 20-somethings in general. Being older and un-hip just sort of goes with the territory of receding hair lines, or having to arrange for a baby sitter to go out. Hmmm... I took that comment to simply mean that, in essence, the core fans of both BT and TMDR are similar - dedicated, respectful, and knowledgeable folks who care about the music and the person behind it. But BT's folks are, most certainly, a younger crowd. I've been lurking around BT's forum for a few weeks, hoping to learn a little more about the music and the folks who will be at the gigs. Most seem to be in their 20s, some are teens... And something that's really cool is the warm reception and positive reviews for TMDR from BT's fans. It's a pretty amazing thing to get someone's young mind wrapped around the music we've loved for a couple of decades. If I had kids (and I recognize I'm now old enough to have kids who would be BT fan age), I would be introducing them to Dolby tunes for sure. Fairly cool that these guys are coming to appreciate Thomas without a parent leading them there, no? I chuckled a little wistfully at the "hipper" comment, Kara. I can guarantee the average 21-year-old who listens to BT's music is more hip than I am - I think clubs might actually keep me out at this point as to not diminish their hipness! (I am "arthritic hip" actually - and I'm younger than TMDR by seven years or so!) I don't think Thomas is dissing any of us. It surely has to be a great feeling and really exciting for him to see new faces and crowds out there listening and yelling and applauding. But I don't think it means that TMDR appreciates any of us old farts any less. :-) I think this whole year has been about re-establishing ties with the old fans while inviting new ones in. That's both gracious *and* savvy business. I kinda felt, as a matter of fact, that the music we've been granted this year was sort of a "love letter" to all of us old fans. Gathering in really small clubs, getting to hear old songs that bring a lot of memories, seeing Thomas beam down from the stage and tell stories... (and, apparently, if you were the chick by the stage in San Diego - touch him. A lot. LOL) As for TMDR layin' down some pretty dope shit? I can't say the man is wrong! Again, I laughed when I read that review because it was some fairly complimentary commentary, but scribed in the youthful vernacular of the MySpace era. :-) As someone who has been known to swear like a sailor (worse in Russian, much worse), I can't say anything to that point! I have to agree with our BT board compatriot: I think Mr. Dolby is bringing the baddest bad ass old school beat to the stage. Kara, never fear. I don't think Thomas is ever likely to forget the folks who have talked about his music, followed his career, and patiently waited all these years.
