Cracknell" Subject: Alloy: End Of An Era, or Stupid Rich People From Ancaster Well we had a show scheduled last Saturday at the Corktown. The Corktown was really an interesting piece of Hamilton's cultural heritage, it was the CBGB of Hamilton and featured so many unique local acts many of whom went on to great things. It was the centre of the Hamilton punk rock scene for as far back as I've heard tell. I've performed there many times over the years with many different acts. Recently the building went up for sale and the manager of the Corktown did his best to discourage anyone who had plans other than keeping it as a bar from buying it by pointing out everything wrong with the building. Thus this important piece of Hamilton's cultural heritage was saved from two different buyers eager to turn it into a medical clinic. The the owner of the Slante (a Mc Pub type of restraunt popular with the "Plastic Paddys") came in to view the bar and Lou told him how great the place was doing as a bar and all the heritage behind the building and how it would be a great money maker. So the building was saved and it looked like things would continue as usual. Until the owner became scared by the spooky musicians that played the place. It wasn't the kind of bar he and his fellow rich friends in Ancaster would feel comfortable in so the place got a face lift (which was nice) and then a complete personality change) which wasn't nice. No more local acts, no more loud and spooky musicians, from now on only quiet, non-threatening music allowed. So Saturday night our gig was cancelled. It was a triple billed event with Science Ninja Big Ten, Cadillac Bill and the Creeping Bent, and The Shuffle Demons. Nope, all too weird and spooky for the new owners, out they go. I'm cheesed beyond belief. It's like a very important part of our city not only died but has had its corpse defiled for all sorts of perversion. Very, very sad indeed as the Corktown was the last bar of its kind left in the City. Oh well, a new gig came up in Kitchener anyways so we went off to play in a strange little bar called the Circus Room. There are pics of the gig here. http://forums.comicgenesis.com/viewtopic.php?p=1241684#1241684 I'm so heartbroken about the Corktown as I was really hoping to be able to get Thomas to do a show there. Now saddly, it won't happen unless he just so happens to know an awful lot of Irish Rovers songs he can cover.
