LOL I would say that 128 kbps mp3s are roughly similar in quality to most cassettes. If the cassette has pure metal particles (as opposed to oxides) and was recorded appropriately (maximizing levels by virtue of subtle compression) it may sound as good as a 192 or even 256 kbps mp3. Bottom line--the "latest thing" is not necessarily the "greatest thing." If you're not getting 20Hz to 20kHz, flat, and with very little THD and/or IMD, it's no good. I don't mean to sound like an audiophile because most of us recording engineers laugh at the so-called "audiophiles," people who spend tens of thousands of dollars on audio equipment on the recommendation of a slick hi-fi salesman without considering the real physical and electronic realities of the reproduction capabilities of the system. Granted that it's subjective--I've made recommendations to two different major monitor manufacturers, and at the end of the day, it's my recommendation vs. someone else's. Does it sound good? Ask yourself. If you like it, it sounds good! That's the final word. But don't settle for shite. Insist upon excellence, no? Any true TMDR fan would not let crap slip by, right? Jon (from Finland) has posted snippets from his transcription of his interview with Dolby from 2001 (I think) on the forum (the interview he shared with us years ago.) There's a bit about how Dolby, who doesn't have high end audio equipment at home, heard "Gate to the Mind's Eye" on his brother's fancier Dolby 5.1 system and was less than thrilled with it. It wasn't the way he intended it to be heard. If it sounds good coming out of a couple of decent speakers, that's cool. (Makes me feel better about my two college-era 1988 speakers now.) (Part II) >...our Cory-with-the-tummy-bump [congrats!]< ::big grin:: Thank you much! That was actually one of the things that I made a point not to waffle on to Thomas about at the Meet and Greet for sake of sounding completely stupid: it seems to be a family tradition now for the mummy's-to-be to go see their favourite singers in concert. My Mum saw Harry Chapin when she was pregnant with me, and now I saw Thomas while I'm carrying MY first! A mute point, I know, but sappingly sentimental for me. :) >Good grief, I never thought of that!...But then again, I don't think that a standard airliner could withstand the extreme heat generated by the resistance to the plane's journey through the...< ROFL!! You do crack me up, Kara. :) I never thought of the plane breaking free of gravity and flying off into space, either. Interesting phobia. I've always been more concerned about crashing and dying. But I've noticed that the last couple of times I've flown, I've had "Flying North" stuck in my head every time, and I never knew until the concert that it had to do with a fear of flying. I KNEW there was a reason that I like that song. >He said that people liked it so much that he just kept it in the show, and he proceeded to build and play the whole song ["The Flat Earth"].< >>Awesome!! There is just something so...warm and pure and enlightening about the way that piano part sounds.<< I agree. And just to hear "The Flat Earth" being built up from scratch was absolutely amazing. A short glimpse into how Thomas writes his songs, but fascinating none-the-less. And during the Meet and Greet, Thomas told us that it was just within the last three shows that he started performing the whole song. >He even coached us to sing along with him at parts.< >>And *did* you? :^) << Oh, Honey, I was singing along all night long. :-D Granted, it wasn't very loud that anybody noticed, but I lent my vocals to my favourite harmonies like during "One of Our Submarines," "Flying North," and "Hyperactive!" I also helped with a loud "EUROPA!" during the chorus of "The Pirate Twins." :-D >It's totally worth the wait, CoryEuropa. :^) You don't wanna know how long it takes ME to write a post... ;^) < I just have this really bad habit of trying to be as detailed as possible (DAMN my being a writer!...). Oh, well. I guess as long as it keeps the posts interesting, that's all that matters, right? :) Cory-Europa.
