Are we serious fans here, or what. We like *everything* he does, AND make it known we believe that mistakes are 'just part of the act.' Watch him try to push that envelope. :) Or is that what the E/E Ball thing is? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2006 13:54:38 -0400 From: "Cory Stickel" Subject: Alloy: Points East Pub! (Part II) *MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS* (Just a "head's up" for anyone who still wants to be surprised at the remaining concerts...) Thomas took the stage around 10:30p, and it was a pretty cool sight from where I was sitting in the back. I was watching the crowd and suddenly there are the tips of headphone atteneas (sp?) moving along, bobbing above everyone's heads. :) Thomas opened with a wonderfully "updated" version of "Leipzig," a bit more driven and full than the original. He then told the story of the picture of his Uncle Stephen on the wall of the stairs in the house where he grew up, leading into "One of Our Submarines." Some people up front started to yell out "Field Work!" and "WIIIIIND POOOOWER!," to which Thomas replied very politely, "I don't do requests." Thomas explained about seeing the L.A. blackout that prompted him to write a love song to Kathleen, then played "I Live in a Suitcase." He gave the song the same treatment as "Leipzig," and did the spoken interlude without the electronic distortion, which gave the whole thing a fresh new twist. "Flying North" was preceeded by Thomas's story about being afraid to fly because he thought the plane would fly so high that they would break free of gravity and zoom off into space. After that, he told us that when he started the tour, he didn't think he had enough material for a "proper set," so he would build up "The Flat Earth" to give the audience an inside look at what he was doing on stage. He said that people liked it so much that he just kept it in the show, and he proceeded to build and play the whole song. We were then treated to the tale of buying the keyboard stand and the optional bible stand. Thomas made a joke about the following song "could be seen as somewhat religious," and sat down to play "Budapest by Blimp." Someone again started yelling for "Field Work," and Thomas thought for a minute and went, "Speaking of Ruichi," (I know I spelled that wrong. Sorry!) "He contacted me the other day." He was wondering if Thomas would be able to contribute something to a website that was being designed to help draw attention to a nuclear reactor in Japan that's about to blow up but's being ignored by the media. Thomas segued that with how his new-found love of Astronomy led him to making sonification videos of data from the sun. He said that the most of the time "it sounds like shit," but every now and then he gets something really cool. He submitted one of his videos to Ruichi's site, but found that "our sun is in the key of A flat" and the video corresponded perfectly with the opening of the next song. So he told us to watch the video and pay attention to the similarities. A sonification video of the sun was put up on the projector, and Thomas played "Windpower." He even coached us to sing along with him at parts. Thomas then told everybody about how he never knew how many people like the lesser known songs that he wrote, but thanks to the internet and "groups like Alloy," (yes, he mentioned us by name!) he found that not only did people like the songs, but we still have discussions about "the opening court to 'Screen Kiss' or line...four of verse three of 'Airwaves.'" He said that he still drops in on the groups under assumed names and is surprised by all of the activity. He was also surprised at the number of people to take on names of characters from his songs. "So for all you 'Europas' out there, this next song is for you." And the equipment glitched. "Wait. You know what? Let's try that again..." Thomas turned around to collect some stock from behind him, "I have this policy..." He threw out a couple of t-shirts then restarted "Europa and the Pirate Twins." We were again invited to sing along at parts. Some guy up front started yelling "WIIIIIIND POOOOOWER!" Thomas just kind of shook his head and said, "We already went there." He then proceeded to ignore the guy as he built up "Hyperactive!" I was a bit disappointed that Thomas didn't do the distorted "Stand up, hyperactivate! Get up, hyperactivate!" part of the song, but it still rocked all the same. We were then told that if we wanted to help out with the next song, we were more than welcome to, and he played "She Blinded Me With Science." Thomas then disappeared from the stage for a few minutes and came back to "just jam on his new toys for a while." He built up "Airhead" from scratch as the encore and sang it for us (minus the last verse). Part III: Meet and Greet and misc. thoughts about the evening, will follow after work! (I REALLY gotta stop writing such novel length posts. Maybe that'd help me get them done faster!) Cory (aka. To bring awareness of this dangerous situation to the world, Sakamoto has created a podcast featuring music and art by Sakamoto and his friends. The press release is here: http://www.podcastingnews.com/archives/2006/05/electronica_pio.html The page for the podcast is here: http://www.podcastingnews.com/details/stop-rokkasho.org/av-rss2.php/view.htm Scan down a little bit and, available as either a podcast or streaming video, and, voila - you have TMDR performing "Windpower" at House of Blues/Cleveland, with a dedication to this project! How neat is that? :-) Cheers, Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com - --------------------------------- How low will we go? Check out Yahoo!
