The Mancow website: http://www.mancow.com/ The talented Mr. Dolby is, indeed, listed as live tomorrow in the "Lava Lamp Love Lounge." Love that name. :-) Wish I was back in the Midwest right about now... Cheers, Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com - --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Look > at that track listing, it's incredible! > > "Dinner's in the microwave, sweetie" -- in 1980?? 1981?? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I only just got "Retrospectacle" about a week ago, hence am not quite familiar with Leipzig yet [read: have not yet got it memorized note for note and word for word, hee hee] but I'm loving what I'm hearing!! I actually think microwave ovens have been around since the 1960's--originally they were the size of a "regular" oven/range, and they were marketed as "radar ranges". I've got a major "fetish" for old technology myself, giggle giggle, and I think I saw that 'radar range' thing on "Scientific American" or whatever it's called--the one hosted by Alan Alda. But anyway, I think microwaves vaguely similar to the ones we have in our homes today could be found in convenience stores in the early 80's, to heat up your burrito or whatever. I don't imagine that such a microwave had much wattage, though--however, I bet that one's nuked food would glow in the dark. If ya didn't wanna turn on a lamp, then you could probably still see to eat... ;^) I never had the guts to try using a convenience-store microwave, though--I couldn't afford my own Geiger counter to ensure that the radiation emitted therefrom would not mess with my DNA. ;) I even think that my local 7-Eleven still has their original big, scary microwave from the 80's...eek! ;^) Visionary that TMDR is, he probably foresaw a day when homes would have microwave ovens in their kitchens. Ya wanna bet??!?! ;^) I just love the metaphors that are to be found in TMDR's song lyrics...it's pleasantly engaging to try and figure out the symbolism, isn't it! :^) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, > On Sat, 13 May 2006, Melissa Jordan wrote: > > > Keith, I completely agree. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Me too! :^) Would it be too over the top to observe that TMDR has a magnificent mind??!? People with brains like his are few and far between, I think. It often seems to me that he's so far ahead of a lot of us that we [or maybe only me!] have to strain our own brains to their very limits just to try and understand his concepts. When I tried to wrap my mind around 'Sonification', for example, I got a splitting headache. Big ideas don't always fit in this brain too well, hee hee! ;^) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, > > I had this discussion with friends on the > > way home from Rams Head last Saturday. I posted this over on the forum, but since I know we have some synth geeks here, I thought I'd offer this up directly to you, for your enjoyment and edification: Back in April, there was a fundraising event for WITNESS, a charity founded by Peter Gabriel, to bring attention to human rights abuse around the world. As part of the fundraising event, musicians signed the keys of a vintage Fairlight CMI keyboard - the keyboard will be auctioned off later this year. The musicians who signed keys are: Alan Parsons, Annie Lennox, Barry Gibb, Billy Gibbons, Boris Blank, David Gilmour, David Hirschfelder, Hans Zimmer, Herbie Hancock, Ivar Davies, Jan Hammer, Jean Michel Jarre, JJ Jeczalik/Art of Noise, John Paul Jones, Kate Bush, Keith Emerson, Laurie Anderson, Lindsey Buckingham, Midge Ure, Mike Oldfield, Mike Rutherford, Nick Rhodes, Steve Winwood, Stewart Copeland, Thomas Dolby, Todd Rundgren, Trevor Horn, Brian Eno, Bono, Howard Jones, Roland Orzabal, Mark Mothersbaugh, Devo, Elvis Costello, Sir George Martin, Brian Wilson, Mark Knoplfer and Joni Mitchell, as well as digital mixer manufacturer Fairlight. Here's a video with the keyboard - and a vintage 1980 Fairlight demo cassette as the musical accompaniment (the demo music cracks me up, but damn, it was state of the art in the day, eh?) Eventually, the video pans over the keyboard, so you can see the autographs. Can you spot the Dolby key? Am still unable to reply to Thomas' blogs [I even reinstalled Firefox and Netscape--close but no cigar], and I have what I think is a pretty funny caption to Thomas' apple-transformation photo, if anyone wants to use it, as I can't... "It had to happen...an Apple virus! Rather than turning into a pumpkin at midnight, an unsuspecting Mac user will gradually start turning into an Apple, starting at 9:00 p.m. or so."
